We celebrate the holiday season in unique ways.  We participate in certain activities, eat certain foods and celebrate certain events.  Our holiday traditions are usually based on our ethnicity, our faith and our family.  What are your holiday traditions?  How are you celebrating the holiday season?  Is there any special meaning to what you are doing?

Please reflect on your experiences working in your “village groups” during the last two days.  What do you think went well?  What were some challenges you experienced?  What do you think you might do differently the next time you work on a group project?  Do you think it is important to be able to work with others?  Why?

On Friday we toured the villages of Samoa, Aotearoa and Fiji at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We also took a quick tour through Hawai’i and learned about the voyaging canoe Iosepa. What surprised you? What do you wonder about? Why do you think it was important for us to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center?

Today we heard some wonderful holiday stories at Hale Pelekikena!

In the story about Liko and the Sandman, Liko had few friends and the sandman helped him make new friends.  Do you think friends are important?  Why?  What qualities do you look for in your friends?

In the story about Hala, Mana and Pua, only Pua received Christmas gifts because he was pono.  What does being “pono” mean to you?  How are you pono at home and at school?

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving with our families and friends.  Describe your celebration.  What blessings are you thankful for?  How do you show your appreciation?

Today we watched a wonderful play written by Aurand Harris and performed by Keaka Kamehameha.  What do you think are some of the big ideas of “Androcles and the Lion?”  What makes you think that?

Weather… Weather… Weather…   Mrs. Redona and Mrs. Kutsunai have got you thinking and learning about this hot topic.  What are your weather wonders?  Why do you think it is important to learn about the weather?

Today we explored Cowgirl Peg’s website in preparation for her visit.  What did you learn?  Any wonderings?  What questions do you have for Cowgirl Peg?

Our first Walking and Jogging field trip together was so special!  What a wonderful trip Mr. Tschillard planned for us and what an amazing opportunity to listen as Dr. Stender shared his mana’o about Kapalama!  What did you learn?  Why do you think it is important to remember?

What a fabulous book fair we attended today!  There were so many wonderful books to choose from!  How do you select the books you buy at the book fair or the books you borrow from the Hi’ilei Media Center?  What kinds of things do you consider?  Why?  Can you provide an example?

When we looked up the word, “hero” in the dictionary we found out that it is used to describe someone with “exceptional courage and strength.”  Then we added some details of our own.  Who are some of your heroes?  Why?

Wow!  What a day!  We experienced so many things today at the Bishop Museum.  What do remember that you think is important?  What do you wonder about?  Why do you think it was an important huaka’i for us?
