Compare/Contrast Paragraph 1: “Broken Spears” (poem by an Aztec poet) and “Spanish Explorations” (map of Spanish conquests)

Write a paragraph comparing the ideas and/or perspectives in the poem and the map. Student groups should use information from their Historical Analysis Forms and include both summaries written on whiteboards in class. Paragraph is to be written in a shared google doc. Students can work together or split kuleana. Paragraphs should have:

  • Topic sentence including the names of the two sources;
  • Summary of the information and perspective of the map;
  • Summary of the information and perspective of the poem;
  • Discussion of similarities and differences;
  • Conclusion.

Done in class 9/26 (Odd); Finish as homework, due 9/29 (Even).

Reading: Students are to read the article assigned to their group and come in with questions written down — anything from word meanings to “what does this part mean” and on.

Assigned only to Odd-day classes; due 9/28. Even-day classes will do in class on 9/29.

Know the names of the cultural regions, where they are, and the main points we covered in class/on the kahoot. To study from the kahoot, follow the directions below, but search for “Native American Cultural Regions” by prmandoe.

  1. Go to getkahoot.com
  2. Create an account as a teacher.
  3. Search for “Nystrom Atlas Summaries 5-12”
  4. Click play, get to the game code screen. Minimize the screen – show on half your desktop.
  5. Open kahoot.it and enter the game code. Make this the other half of your screen.
  6. You can now play by yourself or with classmates/friends.

E hoʻomākaukau! The test will be about one page, double-sided. It is likely to include visuals (the placard pictures), maps, and some matching, short answer, and multiple choice.

Cultural / Colonization Map

Choice 1:

A. Illustrate the cultural regions map (on the left, already labeled with names of the regions we studied). Use the Cultural Region Placards to remember the resources and lifestyles of the people in these areas. Illustrate the people and environment with as much beautiful detail as possible.

B. Color-code the map of European claims on the right. Give each colonizing nation (country taking over) a color. Create a key showing who claimed where.

Choice 2:

A. Illustrate as above.

B. Transfer the map of European claims ONTO the map of Cultural Regions. Draw in the claims each nation made over the cultural regions, making a thematic map showing the Native Cultural Regions and which European power claimed which land.

HW:

Finish world maps. Neatly locate and label all places on the Three Worlds Meet Flier directions (see blog entries below). Use physical and political maps found on google, in your booklet, and in the classroom to help you. Due 9/16 (Odd). Due date for even classes  TBA (to be announced).

Study Cultural Regions and The Nystrom Story Summaries for upcoming quiz. Date TBA.

Classwork: Read the Three Worlds Meet Summaries, which are based on your work over the last two days. Write multiple choice or true/false kahoot questions with answers to help us master the info.

World Maps: Label and Locate: Due 9/16 (Odd) and 9/19 (Even). Find the list of places here: Three Worlds Meet Flier, on the second page. Locate places using maps online and in your booklet. Label neatly in pencil. Draw in country borders, rivers, and mountains. Blank outline maps are being handed out in class.
