Native American Cultural Regions (in the U.S.A.)

  • In class, we should have read History Alive! Chapter 1, The First Americans, Sections 1.2, and 1.5 – 1.12
  • Match the Cultural Region on your pink sheet (notes from class) to the Cultural Region Placards.
  • Write the name of the region and the placard it you think it matches on binder paper. Placards are lettered in the top left hand corner.

Quiz on Vocabulary and GeoSHAPE (6 Areas of Social Studies)

Poster / Rubric Exploration: Discover what is expected on the upcoming poster assignment by comparing examples to the rubric. (Come in to class to make this up, or just read the rubric.)

Homework: GeoSHAPE Organizer

  1. Find the organizer with questions in your booklet.
  2. Brainstorm answers to the questions for each area of Social Studies AND the 3 Papa. Spend at least 20 minutes; come up with a specific idea of how this area affects your life for each of the areas.
  3. You can use the blank organizer in your booklet, or make your own on binder paper. Writing the category and jotting notes below is fine; the Venn-x-4 diagram is not required.

Learning Diagrams / GeoSHAPE Quiz

  1. Finish learning diagrams (#13-20) and study vocabulary using the cover, think, check, repeat technique.
  • Study one column at a time.
  • Cover the whole column with a paper.
    • Slide the paper up to show the picture only of the bottom diagram.
    • Think what it represents.
    • Slide the paper up to check the definition.
    • Think what word it matches.
    • Slide the paper up to check the word.
  • Repeat the process for the first word, then go on to the second.
  • Repeat the process for the first two words, then go on to the third… and so on.
  • When you finish one column, use the same process to study the second column. Then review both columns.
  • Repeat for the other side of the page.

2. Review the six areas of Social Studies (GeoSHAPE). (If you missed class, please see another student or Kumu Mandoe for the notes.)

The quiz will cover vocabulary and the areas of Social Studies. We will play a review game related to GeoSHAPE in class before the quiz, which is on 8/15 (O) and 8/16 (E). Learning Diagrams will be collected on the quiz day.

GeoSHAPE: Learning Diagrams

For each vocabulary word up to ____________ (to be announced in class), create a learning diagram. Use the notes and vocabulary list in your booklet to help you. The handout is available in class or can be downloaded and printed here: Learning Diagram Template.

Brief definition that you understand (in the middle)

Picture representing the meaning/s (at the bottom). Pictures can be stick figures, fine art, icons, symbols… any visual way of showing the meaning of the word that you can draw. Score is on showing the meaning accurately, not artistic style.

“I Am” Poem

Write 10 lines beginning with “I Am…” and finishing with a specific image from nature that is dear to you, that makes you feel alive. Feel free to look under “Student Work” for samples of student poems from last year.

Purpose: Ground yourself in the geography of your place as you begin study of U.S. history… as an indigenous person.

10-line rough draft due on 8/9 (Odd) and 8/10 (Even).
