- 2. Answer these essential questions:
- Essential Question 1: How does Sam Kaʻai show mahalo (respect, gratitude) to his kūpuna AND involve them in modern life?
- Essential Question 2: How can we mahalo and involve our ancestors in our lives?
- 3. Discuss in small groups, then share out with whole class.
- 4. Create and post a class web or chart sharing your answers to #2.

- Essential Question:
- How did our kūpuna speak about gratitude, and how can I use that as I give thanks for the blessings in my life?

- Activity One:
- Students read the 5 ʻōlelo noʻeau, and choose one that they find meaningful. (You can look further under “appreciation” in the index of ʻŌlelo Noʻeau if none of these fit your taste.)
- Students who chose the same ʻōlelo noʻeau meet together briefly to discuss the meaning of the saying and how it applies in your lives.
- Activity Two:
- Write a letter of mahalo to a person in your life who you truly appreciate. Include:
- A greeting,
- The ʻōlelo noʻeau,
- What it means literally and in your own words,
- How this applies to your relationship with the person you are writing to,
- What you appreciate about that person, and
- A closing
