ʻOkakopa Lesson 2: Through the Eyes of the Ancestors

  • 1. Watch this video:

  • 2. Answer these essential questions: 
  • Essential Question 1: How does Sam Kaʻai show mahalo (respect, gratitude) to his kūpuna AND involve them in modern life?
  • Essential Question 2: How can we mahalo and involve our ancestors in our lives?
  • 3. Discuss in small groups, then share out with whole class. 
  • 4. Create and post a class web or chart sharing your answers to #2. 

ʻOkakopa Lesson 1: Letter of mahalo

  • Essential Question:
  • How did our kūpuna speak about gratitude, and how can I use that as I give thanks for the blessings in my life?
  • Resource 1:
  • Ōlelo Noʻeau on Mahalo
  • Activity One:
  • Students read the 5 ʻōlelo noʻeau, and choose one that they find meaningful. (You can look further under “appreciation” in the index of ʻŌlelo Noʻeau if none of these fit your taste.)
  • Students who chose the same ʻōlelo noʻeau meet together briefly to discuss the meaning of the saying and how it applies in your lives.
  • Activity Two:
  • Write a letter of mahalo to a person in your life who you truly appreciate. Include:
    • A greeting,
    • The ʻōlelo noʻeau,
    • What it means literally and in your own words,
    • How this applies to your relationship with the person you are writing to,
    • What you appreciate about that person, and
    • A closing
