U.S. History through Sports

U.S. History through Sports [KHO3286] NEW!

Year

Prerequisite: None.

Meets credit for U.S. History graduation requirement

This U.S. History course focuses on how athletics and culture reflect current events in America during the different eras in United States history, primarily doing the 20th century. NASCAR developing out of the Prohibition Era of the 1920s, Title IX mandating equality between men’s and women’s sports, and the “Miracle on Ice” in the 1980 Winter Olympics are just a few examples. We will be learning about different eras from Industrialism to the turn of the 20th to 21st century through the lens of sports events that illustrated and/or reflected the socio-cultural temperature of the time. This course will be a reading and writing-intensive course that will strive to develop research, analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills through writing and discussion.

A major research project will be completed to enhance these skills as well.
