Aloha mai kākou!

Welcome to the Kamehameha High School Social Studies department.

The purpose of the Social Studies Department is to empower learners to be informed, reflective thinkers, who are productive and responsible citizens, and caring members of society. Students will work to meet these goals as they continue to refine their knowledge of changing political, social, economic and technological characteristics of human society.

The social studies curriculum will offer students the opportunity to investigate being a native Hawaiian, examine their connection to their country and explore their relationships with other lands, peoples, and institutions. Students will also develop skills in critical thinking, reading, writing, analyzing, and synthesizing. Through investigation and research, students will weigh historical evidence and draw conclusions based on informed judgment. It is also imperative that students gain a firm understanding of who they are as Hawaiians and continue to develop their abilities to live as a Hawaiian in a global community.

Important Note: All students are limited to earning no more than 1 social studies graduation requirement credit during the course of three summers. For example, a student may take Hawaiian History (0.5 credit) and Economics (0.5 credit ), or US History (1 credit), or World History (1 credit) in a summer.

Administrative approval must be received prior to registering or taking credits beyond the 1 credit limit. If a student exceeds the 1 credit limit without prior administrative approval he/she will be required to repeat the course during the regular school year. The administration may approve exceptions to this policy for boarding students and for students who need to make up social studies credits during the summer.

E kipa mai! Come meet the kumu who make this all possible!
