Semester Course

Prerequisite: Recommendation by a Hawaiian Language teacher or 3 or more consecutive years in Kula Kaiapuni (Hawaiian Language Immersion School).

Aʻo ʻia kēia papa ma o ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. Aʻo ʻia ka Honors Moʻomeheu Hawaiʻi i mea e aʻo ai nā haumāna o Kamehameha i ka moʻomeheu o Hawaiʻi a me ka poʻe Hawaiʻi i ka wā kahiko.  E aʻo ʻia ana nā ʻike pili i nā kānaka Hawaiʻi e laʻa me ke ʻano o ka nohona, nā ʻike pili i ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, nā loina oli, ka ʻāina/kai, ka hoʻokaʻaʻike ʻana, nā mole, ka hoʻomana, ke kaiāulu, ke aupuni, a me ka noʻeau hoʻokele waiwai.  E hoʻoikaika ʻia ana nā mākau hoʻokaʻaʻike ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi i loko no o nā hanana kākau, palapala, noiʻi, ʻōlelo waha, haʻiʻōlelo, loiloi, a me ke kālai manaʻo ʻana.  E hoʻoikaika ʻia ana nā loina Hawaiʻi o nā haumāna.  E ʻike ana nā haumāna i ko lākou kuleana ma ke ʻano he Hawaiʻi i kēia au nei.

This course is taught in Hawaiian language. Honors Moʻomeheu Hawaiʻi is designed to teach our Kamehameha students about the culture, knowledge, and people of traditional Hawaiʻi. The students will engage in enriching curriculum about our kūpuna Hawaiʻi including but not limited to: daily traditional lifestyle, Hawaiian language, chanting protocols and practices, the land and sea, traditional ʻike transferring methodologies, traditional Hawaiian spiritual systems, Hawaiian community, economic and government systems, traditional Hawaiian jobs and responsibilities, as well as our beginnings as a Hawaiian people. Communication skills will also be strengthened through the Hawaiian language through various avenues during the course, including but not limited to: writing, documentation, research, speaking, formal speech, evaluation, and analysis. Students will strengthen their understanding and practice of Hawaiian protocols and customs. Students will gain an understanding of their kuleana as Hawaiians in today’s society.
