Advanced Placement U.S. History [KHO3102 (Alt 11)]

Year Course

Prerequisite: Recommendation by social studies teacher

This course gives students a thorough grounding in US History from pre-colonial times to the present. The course content is fast-paced and reading and writing intensive.  Students will consider big historical dilemmas and develop skills in evidence-based argumentation.  The course encourages students to become historians and develop their historical imagination through reading the primary and secondary source material and through the National History Day research project, the nationally recognized history research competition. Students will also participate in high-level Socratic seminar discussions, mini-debates and will be able to apply their creative side in special projects.  Students will also learn and practice the techniques and strategies for taking the AP Exam in May over the course of the year.  This includes primary document interpretation and writing strategies.  The course prepares students for the AP exam in May.

There are required summer reading and writing assignments to complete by the end of the summer prior to the course.

AP EXAM FEE: $95.00 (approximate) – payable at the beginning of the second semester.
