Our Quest Continues…The 5B FISH! Ho’okipa Mayor Harry Kim

Mayor Kim joins 5B to share his kuleana

The 5B FISH! were again taking the “dive” to deepen our understanding of our essential inquiry question: “What Is Our Kuleana?”  Recapping a previous post, it began as a class inquiry project into the scary false missile alert.  We had questions, like many in the islands: Why did it happen?  What do we do when alert happens? Our questions quickly evolved (after doing some research) & Kyler shared w/me his questions: “How did Mayor Kim get the “false alarm” notice out so fast?  He wondered aloud, “What systems does he have in place to do that? No other island responded as rapidly as the Big Island to let people know it was “all clear!”  Kyler looked at me & said, “I have questions for Mayor Kim.”  Being proactive, “I’m sending you his email address, would you please invite him.” Thinkers, learner, & seekers of knowledge-‘imi ‘ike came to my mind.  Those ?s started this post…

Everyone was so excited to welcome our Mayor, Harry Kim into our classroom to learn from him as he shared his mana’o on his kuleana for the people of Moku o Keawe.

He began by saying,” You are Special!” I want you to know that.  He shared all about his early life growing up in Ola’a w/no electricity, sharing a bedroom w/8 people, & loving the outdoors and finding peace in nature.  His favorite past time climbing coconut trees and listening and learning from his Father and his Tutuman…how he idolized them for their “work hard” work ethic, gentleness, kindness, and grace.  He grew up in the times when there were many wars…people fighting for power, because of political, cultural, religious differences, & personal gain.  He believes that we, ke keiki ʻo ka ‘āina ʻo Hawaiʻi nei,  are now the people of the world by setting the example… being of many cultures, religions, having differences, but finding the true aloha within to move forward to better all.

This began our class inquiry project

The inquiry project questions began to flow from students…Mayor Kim continued by answering how the county’s Civil Defense could get the false alarm out to the people because of TEAMWORK! He said within 4 mins. of getting the message, he grabbed his shirt & shoes and was in his office.  He said to our surprise, he wasn’t the 1st one there!  2 other members of the team beat him and a bunch more ran in right after him!  They give their best effort at all times!  (Sound familiar keiki? :). Everyone knows their kuleana, they care…to keep the people of the Big Island safe!  Gov. Ige has asked Mayor Kim to meet w/his team to share mana’o to keep the state safe too.  He said he’ll share our ?s w/the Governor!  I mana leo haumåna….Let your voices be heard…it counts! Yes, 5th graders can make a difference!

Peace in the world!

So much to ask, the ?s continued on the the topic of Mauna Kea and TMT, which is our argument writing performance assessment topic…the Mayor started with:  *We must admit the wrongdoings of the past *Respect everyone’s point of view now  *Collaborate for the future  *Really listen to each other with aloha & want to see both sides to want to find a solution.  He wants to help by bringing people together & having everyone to be inclusive and not exclusive in their thinking….be aloha.  Mayor Kim shared his vision of sharing our culture with the world by continuing to look for a solution from multiple perspectives.  This connects to us as we learn about Makawalu (literal meaning- looking w/8 eyes)…looking at the world through multiple perspectives.  He closed this topic with “Just because I’m the Mayor, it doesn’t mean I’m right…it’s my thoughts to a solution.”

Hanauna Hou…for Future Generations

Next up, our essential year long inquiry question…“What is your kuleana?” as our Mayor, we asked.  Answer: To make it better for hanauna hou..the future generation! He said he must be open and honest.  He takes on the kuleana of admitting the wrongs of decisions made in our past (the fault of times) & the kuleana to make it right in these times.  He shared examples using the Queen K highway & the Breakwall. How ancestral iwi was not treated w/respect and how it is very different now…because people have a better understanding. The breakwall was built to keep people save from Tsunamis in the time, but also negatively impacted our bay.  His dream…to use information we know now to rectify it to help our bay to thrive again.  He emphasized listening!

Mayor Kim’s dream for Hilo Bay

In his closing mana’o, he called haumåna to ACTION…(more connections to our class discussions of knowing is NOT enough, we must put our ‘ike into action).  He said, “the world needs YOU!”  *Share how you embrace others & our differences. *Share your aloha & allow others in the world to feel your warmth, your kindness, your goodness, and your purity *Share how you all live, be an example!  *Hang on to your dreams!  Mayor Kim ended where he began…You are SPECIAL! I want you to know how Special you are!

Mayor Kim, Mahalo for visiting our class, for sharing your mana’o so honestly and freely, & most importantly, for sharing your heart, your aloha with all of us…FOR ALL OF US!  An hour packed with smiles, hugs, & honesty.  A time of learning, a time pure aloha! Imua Mayor Kim, Imua Kamehameha, Imua Moku o Keawe!

“Dive” Back into our FISH!bowl to see what the 5B FISH! are doing…up next, we’ll be learning from our very own Headmaster, Mrs. Naeole-Wong will be joining us soon to share her perspective on our essential question: What is Your Kuleana-In Education! 🙂

Ending the Week with Excitement! So Many BUSTED!

Itʻs Aloha Friday! The FISH! Were off and Swimming Strong….What a way to end the week!  The day began with Kyler being BUSTED!  A couple of weeks ago, the FISH! were doing an inquiry project on the false missile alert.  During the research phase, Kyler shared w/me that he had a few questions that heʻd like to ask Mayor Kim.  He found that Mayor Kim was one of the first people in our state to let the residents of Moku o Keawe know that there was no threat!  He wanted to know how he did that?  What system did he have in place to move so fast? Could he share that info w/the State people?  My question to Kyler, “How would we be able to ask him?”  Kyler again took to his ipad (proof that ipads are used for good and not evil by students)…he found the Mayorʻs email, sent it to me and asked me to invite him to answer the many questions.

Kylerʻs drive to know more brings Mayor Kim to class soon!

Long story short, we did, Mayor Kim will be our honored guest on Tues., Feb. 27th!  We also got a call from his office that the Mayor wanted to send along a letter to the 5B FISH!  Atta way to work hard and go to the source Kyler!  Nāna i ke kumu!  Kyler, you are BUSTED #8! We may have a future Investigative Reporter in our midst!

Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai! Give love and it returns!

Landyr began morning meeting with a share out…he shared, “we have a voice, even if we are kids!”  He pulled out a map of Texas and a card filled with much appreciation from his Grand Aunt who lives there.  He said that she shared the teamʻs video mele w/many of her friends in Texas and they were touched by the thoughtfulness!  In return, she sent a card  that was signed by many to show their appreciation & a map of the great state of Texas for us to learn even more! Wow, aloha came full circle!  Taylor added manaʻo, “Kids CAN do good too!” Kaiwiula synthesized our class book “Wonder” by RJ Palacio by adding his connection of the main character.  He said, “good deeds can change the way people think and the way people feel!”  He even shared a great example with evidence from the book!  Emma closed out that convo simply by saying, “Good Karma!”  Yes, kaʻu iʻa…I Mana Leo!  Let your voices be heard!  It matters!  Landyr, you are BUSTED! Busted #9 for offering evidence that our team CAN make a difference in our one world!

Creativity w/tech promotes teamwork and FUN!…and THINKING!

Mia took charge of morning meeting next…she shared that she replicated  a guessing game, “Who Am I?” that she saw on YouTube!  (Again, using tech for good!) She took pictures of teammates, really zoomed in on them & everyone had to guess who that was!  We saw necks, foreheads, smiles, even arms!  We really needed to know our team in order to figure it out!  The good news, we guessed correctly!  Evidence that we are truly “present” with each other!  Mia said, “This game is good for the team, we like games and itʻs a great way to start our day!  Having fun!”  See the team thinking hard, firing up those brain cells for the day!  Mia, you are BUSTED #10 for using your free time at home to uplift the TEAM & promoting TEAMWORK!  All this by 8:30am!

Growth Mindset in ACTION! Even when its tough!

We ended our day with courage!  Last BUST of the day…Caylee you are BUSTED #11 for being courageous!  Fierce like a lion during math!  The team was learning a new money strategy in math that helps us to convert fractions to decimals…not easy by any means!  Caylee kept a growth mindset and continued to hoʻomau!  She did not give up & fought frustration like a beast! We learn, we try, we struggle, we ask questions, sometime we get frustrated,  & we keep trying again & again until we understand it!  Busted…for being a great example of that “stick with it” growth mindset!

#OTOD!

Yes, haumāna…I warned you…this was gonna be a long post!  :)LOL! So much to share w/ohana about our team and the daily happenings in our FISH!bowl!  To our Fab 5B Ohana, hope you enjoyed “diving in” & “swimming along” w/us to see the TEAM…while they “swim strong” TOGETHER!  Mahalo for always supporting our team efforts!  Have a wonderful Hoʻolauleʻa weekend!  Aunty Pua and Aunty Trisha, mahalo nui loa for leading Papa ʻElimaʻs PTO charge!  Sending a special Mahalo to all who help to support nā pua a Pauahi to help each and everyone of us thrive!  A banner day! Imua 5B FISH!…Imua Kamehameha!

Diving Into Valentine’s Day with the FISH!

Love in the air! Valentineʻs Day…Together! #OTOD

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! So much to do, so little time in the day…

Congrats to our 5B “FIN”alists Kerilyn and Kūhaʻo for representing our class well bright and early this morning at our Lamakū Speech Festival!  Kerilyn shared that it is our kuleana to take care of the animals in our world- to keep them safe…therefore, free animals in captivity!  Kūhaʻo shared all about pets and why everyone should have one as the health benefits surely outweigh the kuleana.

Kūhaʻo from 5BFish on Vimeo.

Kerilyn from 5BFish on Vimeo.

Talia did a fabulous job of MCing the program with just a days notice after the flu took down Leigh Ann.  Mahalo for jumping in to kōkua a teammate!

MAHALO for all the sharing, caring, and partnering & makana…the meaʻai was so ono, everyone loved it!  Enjoy your evening!

Mahalo for the makana!

Busted #6 & 7: FISH! Get Caught!

Teamwork, Always willing to lend a hand!

A huge catch of FISH! Today!  Our day began with Reese and Kamaka putting teamwork into action.  They were alakaʻi to lead our morning meeting sharing and when Reese started a sentence and got stuck, he looked over to Kamaka & he jumped right in to finish it! We discussed how the trust level has gone up as Reese felt confident that Kamaka would lend a hand and Kamaka jumped right in to do just that!  Teamwork!  Hence the BUSTED!  Reese for trusting his teammates and Kamaka for offering assistance!

Feel the LOVE! Share the LOVE!

Score!  Caught more FISH! For the busted post when Mya walked up to me, book in hand, to share how she had this great book on her home bookshelf.  She continued to share why she thought it was great and how it would be so perfect for Kerilyn!  She even shared connections to a few book presentations that Kerilyn did to justify why it would be one that Kerilyn would love to read!  BUSTED Mya,  for really being “present” with her teammates to know what they would like & for offering to loan it!

Looks to me that the FISH! Are swimming strong and are putting teamwork into ACTION!  We discussed in class how everyone has grown together as a team.  The students were proudly sharing their progress of where they came from to where they are now!  So enjoying this journey as we continue the swim TOGETHER!  Welcome Trimester #3, here comes the synthesizing of all the learning so far & make it count!
