Learning Philosophy

Kamehameha School’s Kula Haʻahaʻa on all three islands are nurturing and dynamic communities where haumāna integrate their learning with pono and naʻauao in service to their ʻohana, kaiāulu, lāhui, and honua.  Students are mākaukau to appreciate the importance of their past, understand their role in the present, and think creatively and critically to thrive in an ever changing global environment.

21st Century Learner Vision

The haumāna will exit our kula haʻahaʻa as ethically proficient explorers, consumers and creators of knowledge who naturally integrate the Hoʻonui i ka ʻike Learning Process into all content areas. Students will also use various digital tools throughout the learning process as they develop their research skills and enhance their appreciation for literature and reading. Their entire experience will help them build a foundation for 21st century learning and prepare them to be steward leaders in a global society.

Cycle Schedule

Students in grades 4-6 visit the Hiʻilei Media Center once a cycle for instruction in 21stcentury learner skills and literature appreciation.  Students are expected to read daily as a part of their instruction in the HMC and in their classroom.  To reinforce this practice, students use an online tool called Biblionasium to maintain their personal reading log throughout the school year.  Biblionasium is connected to our Destiny Online Library Catalog and is accessible 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.  In addition to logging their reading time, the students use the site to create reading goals, write book reviews and share recommendations with their classmates.

There are over 16,000 titles including print and electronic books in the HMCʻs general collection including a substantial collection of Hawaiian materials.  All resources in the HMC supports the students recreational and educational curriculum here at KES. Please visit HMC blog grades 4-6 for more information, click here.
