Science, Grade 4

Our Science Vision

Students who exit KES Kapālama Science will have a deep appreciation of science as a human endeavor to understand more about their world.  They will recognize their kuleana to utilize a variety of sources to build knowledge through inquiry.

Ma ka hana ka ‘ike. They will learn science by doing science. Haumāna will create a dynamic concept of interdependence.  They will communicate their learning and develop their own conclusions based upon their experiences.

Students will begin the journey of formulating their kuana ‘ike, their own perspective and world view regarding their island environment—ka ‘āina and ke kai—and their relationship with our planet.

With a commitment to steward our land and natural resources, the focus of our grade 4 Energy Conservation unit is for students to design a solution for a sustainable clean energy future.  Students analyze the advantages, disadvantages, and environmental impacts of using a variety of renewable and nonrenewable natural resources.  They draw conclusions about the most viable energy resources to use in four locations around the world – as well as in their own state of Hawaiʻi.  They recommend solutions to address local needs considering factors such as climate, availability of natural resources, local attitudes, and environmental trade-offs.  Students work collaboratively to design a model house that runs on renewable energy.

Students are encouraged to share their own ideas through note-booking, group work,  class discussions, debates, and a public product or presentation for a real audience.  As a result, students develop content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills.

These are just some of the resources we use in Science class. Check this site often as we will add resources as we learn throughout the year.

Students attend science lab once during the 6-day cycle for 90 minutes.
