The traditional hālau wa’a was a longhouse, a covered structure near the shoreline dedicated to all matters related to canoes, and whose linear measure could provide ample shelter for vessels of sizeable length.
Hōkūle’a History and Parts
Hōkūleʻa is a unique representation of traditional Polynesian canoe design and technology. It has two big 64 ft. hulls and connected by eight crossbeams called `iako. It also has decking and rails on the top of the crossbeams, and two masts that hold up the sails.
