Our Aqua Garden

We recently harvested lettuce and herbs from our aqua garden. This was our third successful garden this year. We are learning to be more aware of insects and keeping the fish fed, but not over fed! The keiki made pizzas and labeled the garden our pizza garden!
We hope to harvest one more crop this school year. Your children are making a slide show about this process.

Hamakua Huaka’i

Yet another awesome huaka’i, this time visiting the district of Håmåkua. We were so very fortunate to be able to meet up with Lucille Chung. She is related to some of the students at our school, but is also a survivor and story teller of the tsunami of 1946. We were so proud of the attentiveness of the keiki as she shared her story and pictures with all of us. We were also able, under the guidance of Kumu Kaleo, to share Hamakua mele and dance with her, our ohana and the point of Laupahoehoe. What a beautiful way to experience sense of place!

Math, Making Ten to add and subtract

Here is a video of Adam explaining the strategy of making 10 to add and subtract.
Note that when you are adding , he will make a number bond using the larger number and adding it to the smaller number to make the number ten. i.e.: 13 + 5, I would take 5 from 13 and add it to the other 5, making 10. Then use the rest of my 13 number bond, 8, and add it to my 10. 8+10= 18. Of course I could just count on, but learning this strategy will help with larger sums.
When subtracting, say 13 – 5, I will make a number bond with the larger number, but turn it into 10 and what’s left. So 13 becomes 10 and 3, then I will take the 10 and subtract the 5, 10 – 5 = 5. Now add the numbers 5 and 3, they are what is left after the subtraction and that is the answer. Hopefully you will see this in Adam’s explanation!

Hilo Huakaʻi

What a fun day we had visiting places of interest to us in the district of Hilo! We saw two fish ponds, recessed at Onekahakaha, had a tour of the Lyman Museum and engaged with three learning activites at Ayvahʻs farm! Whew! I know I was tired! Mahalo to all who came to support us and especially to Aunty Pua for the fun and wonderful set-up at the farm! Enjoy some pictures by going to the photo link on my dashboard.
