A Visit from Aunty Luana!

The first graders had the privilege of learning about the history and purpose of Hiloʻs Merrie Monarch celebration from Aunty Luana Kawelu this morning. SHe had much to share about itʻs background history and rich pictures of the many performers from years past.
Hereʻs an interesting part of her mana‘o: At the first festival there was a hukilau in Hilo Bay with over 2,000 people in the water throwing the huge net! There also was a beard contest for who looked most like King Kalākaua and a relay that used a live fish! So interesting!
The keiki truly enjoyed listening to this Hawaiian treasure and spontaneously broke out into singing Pauahi Nona Ka Lei for her! Enjoy some pictures and a video of our singing another male, Hilo Hanakahi.
