Nae’ole gym: Mr. Ala hosts another successful workout

Mr. Ala conducted another successful workout session on Sunday, Feb. 8 as a number of boys joined him to work their arms, shoulders, and core. Ever the coach, Mr. Ala even worked sprints into the workout:

The Nae’ole 6: Boys do chapel

Sunday brings with it chapel, and the gentlemen of Nae’ole enjoy singing, reading scripture, and listening to kahu’s message. On Feb. 8, six boys from Nae’ole Hale had the opportunity contribute to chapel as well. Damon, Ka’imi, Kade, Keliko, Tory, and Evan shared their talents with chapel-goers:

Bridging the Gap: Super Bowl Sunday (Part II)

This is the second installment of our “Bridging the Gap” series.

It all comes down to this … THE SUPER BOWL! Football is the unofficial sport of Nae’ole Hale and Sundays are usually spent watching the big game on the TVs in the lounge. To celebrate the NFL’s season finale, Nae’ole Hale and Liholiho decided to come together and watch the tilt between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. The day before (Saturday, Jan. 31), the two dorms got to know each other while making lau lau at Liholiho and they were gracious enough to invite us back to watch the game with them:

The set-up. Liholiho was generous enough to host us, and they didn’t disappoint. Here, a group of boys take in a commercial during the game.

What’s a party without food?! The young men of Nae’ole and Liholiho enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers during the Super Bowl.

… And that was a wrap, but not before the group enjoyed a delicious lau lau feast. It was a wonderful way to cap off a fun weekend with Liholiho. Nae’ole looks forward to many more of these activities to come. On behalf of the boarding community at Nae’ole Hale, mahalo Liholiho for your hospitality!

Bridging the Gap: Uniting High School and Middle School Boarding (Part I)

This is the first installment in our “Bridging the Gap” series. From now until the end of the 2014-2015 school year, Nae’ole Hale will be participating in activities with boarders at the high school level. The purpose of “Bridging the Gap” is to illustrate these experiences through pictures and words.

For those 7th grade male boarders arriving to Kamehameha’s Kapalama campus for the first time, the transition to dorm life at Nae’ole Hale can be challenging. For the first time, many of these young men must learn to manage their time, keep a neat and orderly room, wash their clothes, eat nutritious meals, make new friends, stay on top of their homework, sign up for classes … you get the picture. The list goes on and on, and these fellas are expected to do so without the help of Mom, Dad, Aunty, Uncle, Tutu, or Papa. But with the guidance and support of experienced dorm advisors, these 7th graders become young men — and by the time 8th grade rolls around, living at Nae’ole Hale is a cinch.

But then they move on to high school and a new challenge awaits. Again.

To help ease the transition, Head Dorm Advisor Mr. Kekua devised a plan. He teamed up with various dorm advisors at the high school level and planned a series of activities to help bridge the gap between the middle school and high school boarding communities.

On Saturday, Jan. 31, the Nae’ole boys visited the young men of Liholiho Hale. Together — and led by Mr. Bento — the group made 160 lau lau. The lau lau was to be eaten on Super Bowl Sunday, again at Liholiho:

Camping at Kokololio: A success!

The middle school boarding community got off to a great start in 2015 with a successful camping trip to Kokololio Beach Park (located in Hauula) and taking place over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend, from Saturday, Jan. 17 to Monday, Jan. 19.  The young men of Nae’ole Hale and the young women of Kaha’opulani enjoyed three days of sunshine and beach — while also finding time to play volleyball, throw the Frisbee, or hang out in the shade. A highlight of the trip — as always — was Sunday evening’s dinner, as students were treated to lau lau.

2015 CFP Nat’l Championship Game: Viewing party

Monday represented the culmination of the 2015 college football season with the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game taking place between Ohio State and Oregon. The Ducks ultimately fell to the Buckeyes, 42-20, but it was an event the gentlemen of Nae’ole Hale were looking forward to throughout the weekend. The boys were allowed to watch the 3:30 p.m. game and eat dinner in the Hale. Mahalo to the dining hall staff for accommodating us and making tasty steaks for us to enjoy.

Many of the boys cheered on the Oregon Ducks, led by Heisman-winning quarterback and St. Louis alum Marcus Mariota. The Ducks boast a couple of other Hawaii products in standout defensive lineman DeForest Buckner (Punahou) and Kamehameha graduate Koa Ka’ai, whose mother, Pua, serves as principal for our middle school:

2015: Back in action!

The gentlemen of Nae’ole Hale returned to their home away from home on Monday, Jan. 5 and enjoyed reconnecting with one another throughout the afternoon and evening. The time off was a much needed break for the boys but they were excited to be back on O’ahu for the new year.

While the boys were away, Nae’ole Hale was bustling with action as the Ala, Bross, Kekua, and Quinabo ohanas enjoyed the holiday season here. Mr. Bross, who is a staff member with the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team, participated in a trio of games during the Diamond Head Classic, from Dec. 22 to Dec. 25. The Rainbow Warriors played the University of Nebraska on the first night of action, winning 66-58. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was Mr. Quinabo, however, as he was recognized as an honorary coach before the game. “The honorary coach” initiative is a new program implemented by the University of Hawaii. The men’s basketball team recognizes an educator, police officer, or member of the military before each game as an “honorary coach” for exemplary work in their field. In addition to the position Mr. Quinabo holds as a dorm advisor here at Nae’ole Hale, he has taught high school science at Anuenue High School for the last five years. Mr. Kekua and Mr. Vincent were also on hand to support Mr. Quinabo and cheer on the ‘Bows:

From top left: Aaron Valdes (23) skies for a crowd-pleasing dunk; Freshman Isaac Fleming twists between two defenders as he attacks the basket; Mr. Bross and Mr. Quinabo smile for the camera before Mr. Quinabo was recognized as an outstanding educator.

… With the fun of the holiday season behind us, we are ready to dig in to 2015 and have a great year! Welcome back to Nae’ole Hale, boys!

Nae’ole gym now in session!

Many of the young men residing in Nae’ole Hale take advantage of school sports, and the various athletic activities provided by the dorm (Hui, especially). Some even make exercise a part of their daily routine by running throughout the hilly campus. However, a structured exercise regimen has never been offered at Nae’ole Hale — that is, until this year.

With many boys craving an outlet for their energy, Mr. Ala — himself, a former Division I football player at the University of Hawaii — offered his services. The gang was able to turn the courtyard into a makeshift exercise area, and some boys are already starting to see results:

Nae’ole and Kaha’opulani Hale provide Wehena

The young men and women of Nae’ole and Kaha’opulani Hale, respectively, provided this week’s Wehena, and they did not disappoint. It began with Patterson, Sama, Vincente, and Blayz blowing the Pu — and continued as Kellen, Kade, and Johnathan called roll. Keliko offered the opening Pule, and Evan delivered a heartfelt message that was well received by all:

Above, Evan received many compliments for sharing his mana’o. His speech was heartfelt and it resonated with students and staff members alike.
