Some middle school kokua came our way this week to support our harvesting of kalo and replanting the huli. We did a kilo of the parts of the plant and prepared the kalo and lau for cooking.
Enjoy looking at pictures from our first huaka‘i to Waiakea Fire Station and Hilo Public Library this week. We learned so much about the tools, station and jobs our brave fire fighters do. We enjoyed dancing and listening to stories at the library and had lunch and recess at Carvalho Park.
Plus a few other pictures from school!
Mahalo for the many eggshells that came in last week to our support our first plantings! Your Keiki heard a story about an eggshell garden as well as another experiment in watching a bean sprout develop over time. We were able to use the many shells for both purposes.
We’ll open some eggs to see what has happened over the past week during our malaria Wednesday time tomorrow!
The following pictures come from three different events: Visiting our 5th graders presentations of their learning, our Easter party, and learning more about māla at OK Farms.
This week at school! Continued work in the māla where we kilo our garden and think about the needs of our plants, kalo in particular. Practicing implements at Hawaiian Language and an ‘Ohana shares their jobs. Mahalo Castro family.
We had a terrific huaka’i this Wednesday to a māla at Onekahakaha! Mahalo to Kumu Noe for setting it up and the wonderful mahi’ai who supported our learning there! We harvested and were able to kilo the different parts of the kalo plant, learning their Hawaiian names. The keiki explored the fish pond area and prepared the cooked corm for the pouring we did.
So many things seem to be occurring this month. We hit the 100th day of school today, worked in many ways with the māla, are learning poems for Lamaku- a speech festival and had a special mahiai visit and help us learn more about kalo!
