Håweo Honors…

Today, Kula Ha’aha’a honored our families and mahalo them for all their support in our efforts to help all our keiki “thrive!”  We enjoyed lunch of nachos together, even if the the mic went dead on Kumu Marcie.  Mahalo to Kumu Marcie for always making it a memorable day…so beautiful!  It was a fab day!  Thanks to Kamailah, Caden, and Alisha’s ohana for joining us!  We couldn’t do it without you!

To 5B FISH!…Don’t forget to wear your red, white, or pink!  We’re capturing the moment by taking some photo to post! 🙂

Ohana Alert for the Week of Feb. 8-12

Get those calendars out…the week at a glance:  Don’t forget to scroll down our class blog to see the latest learning going on in our “FISH”bowl!  Don’t miss a thing, by “diving” in each week!

Mon., Feb. 8-Day 5:  Mrs. Enos will be in class subbing for me for the next 2 days, as I have meetings that I will be attending on campus.  I will be in class for a portion of the day today & in school on both days.

Wed., Feb. 10-Day 1:  Håweo Honors Luncheon today…we mahalo Caden, Kamailah, and Alisha’s ohana today at Ha’aeamahi Dining Hall during lunch! I’m back in class today! 🙂

Thurs., Feb. 11-Day 2:  2nd Trimester officially ends!  Celebrate Valentine’s Day by wearing red, white, or pink today!  Let’s take a class photo!

A friendly reminder to Ohana…9 genre requirement begins again for Trimester #3!  We are also “swimming hard” to our million word goal (28 chapter book total) for the year.  Have a conversation with your keiki to see how hard they are working for their goal.  It would be a great time to also map out timelines to meet the genre goals for the final trimester at Kula Ha’aha’a & not wait until the last minute.

As the keiki and I have been discussing in class…this begins the swim to the finish, as we finish strong!  Have them share about not just surviving, but thriving…& allowing the team to be life savers!  So much to do as we journey on!

Fri., Feb. 12- NO SCHOOL- Faculty Work Day

Heads up…Mon., Feb. 15- NO SCHOOL- President’s Day Holiday!

Stay tuned to see the smiling faces of the haumåna who met their genre goals for the trimester!  We have a multi-millionaire too!

Lamakü: The Torch or Light That Leads the Way…

All of the FISH! worked hard in researching, writing, practicing, and performing their speeches for our annual speech festival which was held on Friday.  Our speech festival is now called Lamakū, which means the torch or the light that shines the way or path.  So fitting as the students needed to share their light!  This year, the students honored Mrs. Pai, who recently retired, for her hard work and dedication to Kula Ha’aha’a.  She was the founder of this great event!  Mahalo Mrs. Pai!  Ho’omaika’i to our 5B finalists Ciana, who presented “Sleep” which persuaded us that sleep so important and that school should start 30 mins. later and Kai, who presented his persuasive speech “TechNology” which focused on the negative effects of too much technology!  Both of them did a fab job!  🙂  Click on the video above, you be the judge 🙂

What is Volume?

What is it?  What is volume?  The students have been learning about volume in class during math time.  As they explored, they came up with an impressive cultural connection.  They connected the formula for volume v=l x w x h to hula.  To remember formula, they use lele uwehe to demonstrate!  How cool is that!  What a team, where we can all learn from each other!  Students making connections from our class to Hawaiian Culture class with Kumu Silva!

Click on the comment button of the post to check out the  2 wonders and an Aha moment from students 🙂 The students took it one step further, they commented on the comments!  They began collaborating with each other to share their ‘ike and clarify wonders.  Learning from each other at its best!  Students offering commentary to kokūa each other!  They even identified the type of mathematical errors they were making to offer assistance!

Click on the video above to see our explorations into measurement and finding volume using centimeter cubes. Below, the students created infopics to share their new learning of volume!

Just a little humor as we begin the "swim!"

Just a little humor as we begin the “swim!”

OMG…can you believe it!?!  It’s already February!  Like I shared with the students, the 2nd half of 5th grade really gets rolling!  The students  and I are “pumped up” for the full calendars filled with much learning, laughter, and teamwork!  Continue to collect facts on your self-selected Makawalu topic every chance! 🙂  We discussed being “one tree in the forest” and thrive techniques!  Ask your keiki all about their welcome to Pepeluali makana 🙂

Here’s the week at a glance for you…

Mon., Feb. 1-Day 6:  Bring your notes to class from Makawalu project and speeches ready to present.  Students are allowed to use one index card w/important points to help while presenting if needed.  Card should NOT have entire speech on it.

Tues., Feb. 2-Day 1:  Speech preliminaries for 5B!  Adjusted my schedule to gi8ve students an extra day since all of absences from class.  We select the top 5 students to represent our team tomorrow!

Wed., Feb. 3-Day 2: Speech Festival Semi-Finals.  The top 5 from our class will vie for top 2 to move on to the finals…tune in again to see who will represent the 5B FISH!

Thurs., Feb. 4-Day 3:  Pheww…we keep swimming!

Fri., Feb. 5-Day 4:  Speech Festival at Lunalilo Hale @ 8:00am.  We invite our finalist ohana 🙂  LAST DAY for book presentations to meet reading goals for the trimester!  Don’t forget the vocab! 🙂

Just a gentle reminder that students should be adhering to the dress code!  Refer to page 23 & 24 for a refresher.  Hair accessories should match color allowed in handbook.  Pg. 25 also refers to appropriate hair. Mahalo as we team to help keiki thrive….
