HANOHANO KAPĀLAMA

Hanohano Kapālama i ka laʻi e
I ka ua Kūkalahale,
Ka ʻolu o ka ʻOlauniu ē
Kahi o nā moʻopuna a Kanaʻiaupuni*
Eia mākou nā pua a Pauahi ē
Me ka haʻahaʻa i ke Akua
Puni i ka ulu aloha**ē
E mālama mau i ka hā Hawaiʻi
E Ola!
Ola nā ʻōiwi Hawaiʻi
E Ola!
Ola nā ʻōiwi Hawaiʻi***
————————————————–

Majestic is Kapālama in the calm
In the Kūkalahale rain,
The comfort of the ʻŌlauniu breeze
Place of the descendants of Kanaʻiaupuni
Here we are the children of Pauahi
With humility to God
Embraced by the abundance of love
Forever protecting all things Hawaiian
Live!
The Hawaiian race lives on!
Live!
The Hawaiian race lives on!

*Kanaʻiaupuni refers to Kamehameha I, the conqueror who united the eight major islands under one rule.
**ulu aloha refers to the pūʻulu (academic teams) at Kamehameha Middle School.
***This line refers to Charles Reed Bishop’s note that one of the reasons why Pauahi established the Kamehameha schools is because she saw the decline of the Hawaiian population.
