Lockdown (Campus and Community)
Conditions to Activate A Campus Lockdown
- Someone has a gun/weapon on or coming to campus.
- An irate or irrational person on or near campus.
- Shots heard on campus.
- Pursuit of a dangerous suspect near or on campus.
- Staff needs to be responsive to the warning signs-Alert.
Campus Lockdown Response
- Principal or designee will announce over the P.A. system “This is a lockdown, this is not a drill” (repeat three times).
- Campus Security or office will call 911 and notify Police of emergency and need for assistance.
- Do the following:
- Move all students, staff and identified visitors into the nearest classroom, office or secure room.
- Lock all interior and exterior doors. Turn off all lights.
- Move students away from windows and doors. Obscure windows with shades or blinds. Students crouch down and remain quiet. Students unable to crouch use a low chair. Students in wheelchairs should remain in them.
- Move furniture to block doors/windows.
- Students turn off cell phones. Teachers put on vibrate.
- Ignore fire alarms unless announced over PA system.
Community Lockdown: A danger in the community, but not known to be on campus.
- Move students into classrooms.
- Lock classrooms.
- Turn off cell phones, Teacher put cell phone on vibrate.
- Use intercoms to communicate.
- Continue with lessons. Stay in classroom unless announcement over intercom.
- Students needing to leave must be accompanied.
- Further directions to be announced over the intercom.
