Ho’omaika’i to 5B Lamakü Semifinalists!

As you may know, the students have been working hard at researching, writing, revising, and practicing their argument papers on a self-selected topic of passion!  The class presentations took place today.  All of the students took part in this class event by being a judge of their peers using the rubric that will be used by faculty to select our Papa ‘Elima finalists, as well as presenting their own speeches.  The categories for scoring were måkaukau (preparation), ho’opuka (delivery), lawena (body action), and külana (poise).

Ho’omaika’i to the following students who scored in the top 5 of our class and will be journeying forward to vie for a coveted spot in our finals which takes place on the great stage at Lunalilo Hale!  (In no particular order)

Rhian, Kalå, Avani, Isabella, and Kalissa

These students will continue to revise and practice their speeches as they are proof that Hawaiians were great orators!

Happy 2017!  Hope your year has started off w/ a bang!  This is the beginning of the “swim” to the finish line! Many huge exciting learning experiences will be forthcoming in the months ahead.  Wanted to take the time to share w/you some of the deadlines coming up soon…

The students have been hard at work collecting facts on their arguement writing piece/speech.  Here’s a few deadlines to put into your calendars:

Thurs., Jan. 19-Fri., Jan. 27:  Students work on fact collection, drafting, conferencing, revising and editing Arguement writing/Speech.  All urls should be documented in notes app.  This is ON-GOING homework which may not be written in planner daily.

Fri., Jan 27:  FINAL Arguement writing/Speech due and will be collected.

Jan. 28-Feb. 1:  Practice, practice, practice!  Students are to practice speech to wow us!  Keeping in mind that the audience will be K-4 students and Kumu as well as school dignitaries and ohana members 🙂  Speech revisions can be made by students if needed during this time to enhance audience experience.

Thurs. Feb. 2-Fri., Feb. 3:  ALL students will be presenting their speech to class.  Each student will be scored by teammates.  Only the highest scores will advance to the semi-finals.  Yes, each will be graded too.  Those that advance would continue their journey of more practice.

Mon., Feb. 6:  Semi-Finals…The top 5 from 5A and 5B will compete to see who takes the great stage of Lunalilo Hale!  Scoring will be done by Papa ‘Elima Kumu as well as various faculty and staff members as teammates cheer everyone on!

Wed., Feb. 8:  Our annual Lamakü Festival Finals @ Lunalilo Hale.  Looking forward to watch the great orators share their mana’o!

Thurs., Feb. 9:  GENRE & READING GOALS due today.  Students should not wait until this day to turn in vocab and do presentations as we will have only a set time to complete.  A majority of students are being proactive and sharing great presentations now to beat the rush.  Have your keiki share our class agreements on this as we have been discussing this from the beginning of the year.  🙂  Happy reading ka’u i’a! Mahalo to ohana for your continued support as we work to prepare for bright futures ahead!

Kauluwena Leads the Way…

Hi Students,

Wanted to give a glimpse of the Senior Expo as the Class of 2017 “Kauluwena” left their mark, their legacy!  Each Senior chose a project that was their passion.  They researched, they studied, they collected data, they did good for our school & community and then what?  They shared their ‘ike about various topics with all of us!  See if you recognize some of our “Big Brothers and Sisters”…who are leading the way on our campus to help our world thrive!

As you prepare for Project Kahiau, where you will select someone in our community to mahalo for the great things he/she does, chose a person who you feel leaves a positive mark on our world!  You will be preparing your speech in class tomorrow!

Mannequin Challenge 5B Style!

As our “Fun Friday” activity during morning meeting, the students and I decided it was time to work together to share what we do in class…mannequin style!  Teamwork at its best as Avani (master mannequin videographer) had to teach me how to do it.  Here’s a look at my 1st attempt (not the best, but trying) …then see Avani’s great tech talents (practiced to proficency) as she captures the great things students do in class!  Everyone had a blast coming up with poses, sharing ideas on what to do, how to showcase learning, combining efforts, & sharing our class beliefs…while building great pilina!  Laugh out loud with us!

Students then added one more, just for fun!  Remember Toy Story? When the toys heard Andy coming?  Well, here’s what students do when they hear….
