Today was filled with wonderful experiences for the keiki! Wow! We got to skype with Uncle Wally Wong, who is a Big Island native and part of our KS ohana with a child in the high school here, on the Hōkūleʻa! So exciting to be able to communicate with him as the waʻa makes it way to Aotearoa! Uncle Wally shared how they are documenting their journey and learning how other cultures are sustaining themselves. He sure wowed the Haumāna will his navigational skills when he quickly glanced at the sky & announced the time of day! Everyone was in awe! It was concrete proof that our ancestors were skilled master navigators and the ʻike is alive and well upon the Hōkūleʻa! He was so kind to share his manaʻo by answering the many questions the keiki had as we all learned that during free time, the crew practiced singing, oli, and even haka!
We ended our day by watching our very own fabulous KS students put on a dress rehearsal of “The Fiddler on the Roof.” What a treat to see Hayden, Karissa, Dakota, Ryzlin, Kaiolohia, and Kameron take the great stage of Lunalilo Hale! It was simply amazing! We even got to see Mrs. Leyendecker flying through the air!
