Huaka’i Heaven!

Today, the Papa ‘Elima 5A & 5B team went on a huaka’i to Mokupāpapa!  We learned how we can be good stewards to our aina and kai.  We studied how marine debri from Humans effect the marine life as well as other animals like the seabirds who ingest it, but cannot digest it.  We had an opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the many different exhibits, we got to cut open and sift through a bolus (what seabirds regurgitate because they cannot digest it), and we went into the “wetlab” to view plankton that was collected from the waters off Moku Ola under the microscope.  We learned about the 2 types of plankton (organisms that drift through water & bottom of the food chain in the ocean) called phytoplankton and zooplankton.  Under the microscope, we discovered brittle star & jellyfish larva! If you go swimming, you probably had a snack of plankton without even knowing it!  The good thing about that, the calories don’t count!  Teehee!

The huaka’i was short, but packed with a tremendous amount of learning!  Ohana, ask your keiki about what was the most interesting, what was the most exciting, or what was the most unusual fact they learned today!  I assure you, you will be amazed!

After returning to class, the students and I debriefed our trip & we could connect our learning to so many different topics that would help us learn to be good stewards to sustain our island & oceans around it!  Students: Don’t forget that you are to think of a topic that connects to our learning today or use one of the many that we discussed in class & come up with 10 questions (inquiry questions) that you would like to answer by Monday. You are not required to research the topic, just to name it and write down the 10 questions that you have about it!  If you have more time, feel free to come up with a few topics of interest & questions.

Happy Weekend to all of you, enjoy your time with each other!  A Hui Hou!
