The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass is a fantasy based in a world much like Earth.  The story takes place in Jordan College at Oxford University, where Lyra and her daemon are hiding in a wardrobe closet in the headmaster’s room.  While hiding in the closet, Lyra overhears a conversation between the master and a servant.  Lyra tells her uncle, Lord Asriel, and end up saving his life.  Lord Asriel lets Lyra hide in the closet, and she learns of “Dust:.  Later in the story her friend gets kidnapped by Gobblers, and Lyra wants to rescue him.  Before she can do so, she has to move to a different college outside of Jordan, the headmaster gives Lyra an alethiometer and a woman named Mrs. Coultur takes in and trains her much like an apprentice.  She stayed with Mrs. Coultur for a while, but her daemon  scared Lyra to the North where she met a family of Gyptians.  Lyra meets the king of the Gyptians and finds out that Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coultur are her parents.  She goes on an expedition tot he North to rescue the captured children.  While on their expedition, they are attacked by a clan called Tartars, Lyra gets kidnapped and meets Roger, the lost Gyptian boy, and finds out what the Gobblers do to the children, and that Mrs. Coultur chases after her.  They are rescued by Lee Scoresby and a witch named Serafina.  They later get attacked by cliff ghasts, Lyra falls from the balloon, and gets captured by the armored bears.  Lyra tricks Lofur to fight Lorek, and Lorek kills Lofur, Roger dies, and Lord Asriel bridges his world to Lyras and Lyra follows Lord Asriel to the new world.

“He lifted her up. Knowing that everyone still in the hall was staring at her, and conscious of those thousand sovereigns she was suddenly worth, she blushed and hesitated.  Pantalaimon darted to her breast and became a wildcat, sitting up in her arms and hissing softly as he looked around.”
