Dear John is a romantic novel dealing with the themes of the rough road to true love and how it survives time and heartbreak and how it can transform us forever. Savannah Lynn Curtis became a part of John Tyree’s life in and instant. He was on leave from the army for just two weeks but it was in those weeks that they fell in love. His visit came to an end and they promised each other to keep in touch. Writing letters back and forth made it seem like their love could withstand anything. but in the end it was just too much for Savannah to handle. She couldn’t keep acing as if everything in her life was fine. Savannah missed John so much that it hurt so she needed to break it off even if that was the hardest thing to do. John was devastated, but knew that he had to let her go no matter how difficult it was going to be. Savannah moved on with her life and found that she could love again and ended up marrying someone else. This demonstrates that the course of true love never does run smoothly.
Sample paragraph:
“My dad wrote as well. Not with the frequency of Savannah, but on his own regular monthly schedule. To my surprise, his letters were two or three times longer than the page or so I’d been used to. The additional pages were exclusively about coins. In my spare time, I’d visit the computer center and do a bit of research on my own. I’d search for certain coins, collect the history, and send the information back in a letter of my own. I swear, the first time I did that , I thought I saw tears on the next letter he sent me. No, not really- I know it was just my imagination since he never mentioned what i”d done – but I wanted to believe that he pored over the data with the same intensity he used when studying the Greysheet.”
