Ways We Serve

Dinner at Ka Hale A Ke Ola

The Teens Under Construction serves dinner on the 5th Thursday of the month, in partnership with ‘Iao United Church of Christ who prepares the meals.  Meals in 2012 will be served on March 29, May 31, August 30, and November 29.  Let Kahu know if you are interested in serving.

Habitat for Humanity

In the past, KSM has participated in the building of homes with Habitat for Humanity Maui.  This has provided students with the opportunity to get a hands-on experience in supporting families in need.  See Kahu for the next trip to the job site.  Participants must be 16-years-old and have a Habitat release form signed by your parents.

Kalaupapa Mission Trip

The story of Kalaupapa is one of a separation of people, from their families and friends, due to leprosy or the more politically correct term- Hansen’s Disease. Some were taken from their homes as young children, some were older. They learned to cope with their illness and with the help of sulfone drugs, have entered back into society. A handful still call Kalaupapa home.

The three KS Campuses strive to serve this tiny community and live out the goals for the Christian Education program, which are to be a worshipping, learning and caring community. As a caring community, it is our goal to foster the development of leaders who focus on service to others. These goals will all come together during our mission trip to Kalaupapa normally held during the fall break.

The students will learn of the history of the settlement and about life of the patients- then and now. We will be leading the Sunday worship service at Kana’ana Hou Congregational Church, just one of the three remaining houses of worship on the peninsula. Our mornings and early afternoons will be spent performing various work projects, such as, assisting the patients with cleaning of their homes and/or yards, beautification projects for the State and National Park Service, and friendly visits to patients in the hospital.

If you are interested in participating in the next Kalaupapa Mission Trip, see Kahu at the start of the school year for an application form.  Here’s a summary of the previous trips through pictures.
