Hi`ilei Media Center
Our library is named after Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s nickname: Hi`ilei. Did you know Princess Pauahi was often found reading under a tree to several children? You can tell that she was an avid reader too.
Our library is also called a media center because it houses 16,000 various types of media including books, magazines, newspapers, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMS, and study prints. These various media formats support both the curriculum and students’ interests. The media center also has a collection of Hawaiian books, videos, and artifacts. Computers in the media center are available for students to access the online catalog and the internet, and are also used to support students with school assignments.
Information Literacy
Students come to Hi`ilei Media Center to learn about reading and research skills that meet the 21st Century Learner Standards. This involves learning about how the library is organized, using resources for research by taking notes, encouraging students to appreciate reading, and locating information. Students may use the OPAC to find books in our library, click here to begin a search.
Pizza Hut Book-It Reading Goal for Grades K-3 October through March
I challenge all students to accomplish a monthly reading goal throughout the school year. Please see the schedule below. Students who accomplish this reading goal every month will receive a certificate to redeem at Pizza Hut. The Book-It Program runs from October through March. That’s six months of FREE pizzas and six months of awesome reading!
Each classroom teacher will also create a reading goal together with na haumāna for the months of October, December, and March. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher for more information.
Students in Kindergarten through Second grade use Kids A-Z (also known as RAZ Kids) to read 100 minutes in thirty days for the months of November, January, and February.

I will check your child’s progress at the end of the month, and you can expect the Pizza Hut certificates to go home at the beginning of the next month. For example, October certificates will go home in the beginning of November.
Students can also read at school and home. It doesn’t matter where because Kids A-Z can be accessed online via the internet when using a laptop or desktop. If you are using a mobile device such as a smartphone or iPad you must download the FREE Kids A-Z app.
I’m hoping parents and teachers will help each child reach their reading goal by giving them time to read at least five minutes per day! They will easily reach 100 minutes in thirty days. I know our students can conquer this goal with your help!

Borrowing Policy: Students will borrow 1 book. Overdue fines will be charged 5¢ per day if book is returned late. Lost or damaged books will be charged $30.00. Please take care of our library materials.
