Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Wow!  Wasn’t that a great Huaka’i Aloha ‘Aina?  I had a blast and I learned a lot, so I hope you did too.  Just one more week, then we have Spring Break.  Our goal this week is to finish the Land Legacy Project.  So, use your time wisely, and you won’t have to worry about homework during Spring Break.  Tomorrow I will be going to a technology conference in California, so you will have a substitute for the rest of this week.  Please be well-behaved and use your time wisely to work on your Land Legacy Project.  I will be taking my laptop with me, so if you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected].  Here’s the tentative schedule for this cycle 19:

Day 1, Friday, Mar. 14, 2014

Happy Birthday to Kailana and Elijah!  What an awesome breakfast buffet we had at the Volcano House!  I loved the astronomy show at the Imiloa Astronomy Center.  It reminded me of “Horton Hears a Who.”  We are a tiny speck in the universe.

Homework:  Finish the Huaka’i puke  Due Day 2 (3/17)

Day 2, Monday, Mar. 17, 2014

Today is our last Math Olympics.  Good luck Mathletes!  If we have time, you may work on your group poster.

Homework:  Land poster  Due Day 3 (3/18)  IXL-Grade 6  Due Day 6 (3/21)

Day 3, Tuesday, Mar. 18, 2014

Today we will go over the Math Olympics Contest #5.  Then, you will have time to work on your land poster.  When you finish, double-check it and the substitute will take your pu’ulu picture with it.  If you’re not done with your poster by the end of class, give your planner to the substitute so you can get a “Late.”

Homework:  Tuition worksheet  Due Day 4 (3/19)

Day 4, Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2014

Today we will vote on the best land poster.  Also, you will work on your essay outline.

Homework:  Essay outline  Due Day 5 (3/20)

Day 5, Thursday, Mar. 20, 2014

Today you will work on your essay rough draft.  Type it on Google docs, then revise it, and have at least 2 peers give comments.  Be sure that you share with 2 people so they can comment only.

Homework:  Final essay, 2 copies, printed, 1 pg.  Due Day 6 (3/21)

Day 6, Friday, Mar. 21, 2014

Today your project is due.  Put all 5 pages in order in a sheet protector and turn it in.  Be sure your IXL is done.  We will have shorter classes, because after lunch we are going to the KMS Health Fair.  Lunch recess will be at 2:15pm.

NO HOMEWORK!  Enjoy your Spring Break! (Please do IXL at least once a week during Spring Break.)

Extra pono points:  What was your favorite part of Huaka’i Aloha ‘Aina?

9 thoughts on “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  1. My favorite part of huakaʻi was at koa reforestation and jaggar because we got to experience what our kūpuna experienced. At jaggar and all those other places I just liked being able to explore

  2. I think that my favorite part of Huakai was when we did the lei making because we got to do and see what our kupuna got to experience before us. We got away from all technology and the modern world, we did it the traditional way! 🙂

  3. I thought that the whole part of huakai was my favorite. But if I had to pick it would probably be planting koa seedlings and being able to see the glow at night at Halemaumau. I liked planting the Koa seedlings because I thought that Uncle Eli was so knowledgeable. I liked Halemaumau because seeing the glow made me really appreciate our island because our islands are so unique that we are able to see that kind of things. And of course bowling was super fun : )

  4. I liked the whole huaka’i! but I loved the night hike. I liked looking at the glow at halema‘uma‘u and going to the lava tube. I also liked walking back to camp because i got to see the glow and the trees.

  5. I enjoyed the whole huakaʻi! I really liked singing Hoʻonani at Nahulu Lava Tube. I also like koa reforestation. Seeing the glow was super cool too! 😀

  6. I liked the whole huakaʻi but the part I liked the most was going to the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center to see and learn about the ʻalalā, because we normally donʻt see ʻalalā. I felt grateful to be able to have a chance to see these rare birds.

  7. uh everything was awesome but if i had to pick it would be the volcano house or the lei making because i thought it was funn and easy. lol bum-buye the koa was intresting kinda hard i kept falling in holes.

  8. I would have to say the koa forest. It spiritually connected me to my ancestors, and where they came from. Also, I learned more things about my school, and the forest itself.

Overall, Uncle Eli was one of the best kumu that week. He shared so much mana’o to us, which was really interesting to hear.

    … Man… I have to go back!!
