Pokemon Go! Morphs into Kamehameha Go!

The Pokemon Go! craze has hit the 5B FISH!  Hard!  The students and I decided to “dive in” the latest worldwide craze of Pokemon Go!  and invite it into our classroom, but with a twist, of course!  Students shared their extensive ‘ike & excitement on this game that has captivated the world with me during our morning meetings…hmmm, talk about teachable moments!

Students brainstormed how we could morph this captivating game to make it unique to us at Kamehameha-Kula Ha’aha’a.  Kamehameha Go! was born!  The students have been working hard at replicating the experience here on campus & hope that it will “catch” the attention of our poki’i, kumu, and ohana.  They are creating “Imua Stops” (pokestops) where haumāna can gain new learning about the specific area, kahua ho’ike (poke gyms) where haumāna can test their skills and challenge each other with new found learning, and will soon be creating palapalahonua (map) to track their journey.

In our class journey so far…we have incorporated culture-based education with our CCSS with research of our wahi pana, math strands in measurement, tech skills, and a whole lot of laughs, smiles, and FUN!  We researched, calculated, measured, created tech experiences,  incorporated art, walked distances, & learned new mele…all the while practicing collaboration skills, being attentive listeners, and sharing the KULEANA of leadership.

The students and I  hope to unveil our collective efforts to the keiki of Kula Haʻahaʻa real soon while hana kūpono to earn alakaʻi status as the leaders of our division.  “Lawe i ka maʻalea a kūʻonoʻono…take learning and make it deep!”  “Dive deep” with the 5B FISH! as Kamehameha Go! is coming real soon to a Kula Haʻahaʻa near you!

Click on the videos below to see how the FISH! had fun with creating Pikachu bookmarks and discovered new learnings in math!  The bookmarks are a reminder to kaʻu iʻa that reading is FUN as we work towards our 9 genre trimester goal and ONE MILLION WORD year end goal!!  Enjoy the journey with us!

Sending a mahalo nui to Kumu Silva, Uncle Jason, and Mrs. Richardson for all your support…all filled with much aloha!  More teachable moments to come!  “Dive Back into our FISH!bowl to see how the FISH! are continuing the SWIM!”

The Cross-Culture Collaboration Begins…

Mrs. Ah Heeʻs Class at KSH

Mrs. Ah Heeʻs Class at KSH

Aloha e nā Haumāna (Hi Students)

Let the cross-culture, real-world, global collaboration begin!  As some of you may know, over the summer, na kumu o ka Papa ʻElima (Gr. 5 teachers) traveled over the ocean to the continent of Asia, (Jinhua,China to be exact) to teach students there!  Mrs. Kay and I taught at the Rise American School for two weeks, we worked with many students ages 8-15, and made numerous Chinese teacher friends!  While there, many of the lessons were focused on hoʻihi (respect) and kuleana (responsibility).

Hoʻihi and Kuleana for self, community, & country.  Just as the students in class at Kamehameha Schools-Hawaiʻi are learning also.  Long story short, the students in China learned about the plight of the ʻalala and what people are doing in Hawaiʻi to help it to thrive.  Then they connected understanding their kuleana for the Giant Panda which is endangered in China & did lots of research.

Now the students here at KS-Hawaiʻi have heard about my students in China and would like to meet…to build a global collaboration & share kuleana with hoʻihi to make our world a better place for everyone and everything to thrive!  Here are a few short videos that the keiki (children) have made to send

across the sea to begin this awesome experience!  We look forward to hearing from some of my former students who are in Miss Scarlettʻs class in China this year!  Miss Scarlett is a teacher at the Rise School and now a dear friend!  Hoping that the students in Hawaiʻi and China can become great friends too

We are all kūkaukaʻi….Interdependent!  Stay tuned and “dive back” into our class blog as we continue our global collaboration throughout the year!
