FISH! Food for Thought #18: FISH! Swim Into Books!

Keawe holds the record of the most books read in one year at KS!

At the beginning of the year when I mentioned to my new FISH! that theyʻd be expected to read 9 different genres a trimester, every trimester and that the reading goal was to read 1,000,000 words (28 120 or more page chapter books) by the end of the year, many of them had the look of disbelief plastered all over their faces!  The mantra was READ, READ, READ!  Read they did!  See below for the faces that have turned from looks of disbelief to the look of confidence!  Some FISH! have hit “Genre Gold” by reading 9 genres this trimester, some have swam into the “Millionaire Club” by reading 1,000,000 or more words, and Keawe (He now holds the record from all KS FISH! that I have had…so far! Thatʻs 5 years of FISH!) has taken it to new heights by reading more than 2,000,000 words this year by completing 65, yep, I said 65 120 pg. chapter books in one short school year!!!  Give ALL of our 24 FISH! 3 cheers!  Every one of them has grown as READERS!  The words hoʻomau (persevere) and hilinaʻi (believe) sure was a focal point in many a morning meeting we had this year too!  The ʻolelo noeʻau…”Ma ka hana ka ʻike” (In the Journey, there is knowledge) is so true!  Much knowledge can be found in books.  The FISH! will now tell you, at the end of the year as our yearlong journey comes to an end,  it CAN be done!  They are living proof!  The smiles on their faces prove it!  Continue to “Swim Strong” as you prepare for your journey “upstream” to middle school…Remember, Iʻll be asking you all about what you are reading next year too! 🙂  Continue to set the bar high!  Once an Ah Hee kid, ALWAYS an Ah Hee kid! 🙂
