Semi-finalists Move On …

Papa ‘Ekolu held their annual speech festival in their respective classrooms yesterday. Every student was well-prepared and did a smashing job in presenting a fable to their teacher and classmates. It was a close race, but when the points were tallied, the participants were narrowed down to five presentations to move forward.

Congratulations to…

Trinity and Sid: Jupiter and the Queen Bee
Kaelum and Braelyn: The Wolf and the Lamb
‘Alohikea and Shawna: The Rabbit Without a Tail
Kai: The North Wind and the Sun
Napua and Hina: The Donkey, the Rooster, and the Lion

The Semi-finals will be held on February 10, 2014 at 9:10 A.M. in Kina’u Pod. Good luck to all!

Mahalo Rotary Club

Earlier this week, members of the a Rotary Club of Hilo came to visit Papa Ekolu and gifted each haumana with a dictionary. This generous gesture is part of the Rotary Club’s mission to help others in their community. By providing children with dictionaries, the Rotarians hope to help foster a love for reading in our keiki.

Mahalo, Rotary Club of Hilo, for taking the time to visit us and for giving us a very useful tool to help us learn more and more each day!

Speech Festival- Classroom Presentations

Many of our students are doing a fantastic job in memorizing their fables for this year’s Speech Festival. Each student was tested today, and most students could recall and recite most of their fable by memory. The expectation was that they would know at least half of their self-selected story by today.

There’s one week left for the students to practice. Next week Friday, January 31st the students in 3B will be put to the real test as their teacher and classmates score them on their performance. A copy of the scoring rubric can found below. Don’t forget that a great presentation includes appropriate gestures and facial expressions, so start adding those things in this weekend, if you haven’t done so already.

Let’s see what participants will get to move into the semi-finals in February. Good luck to all!

Papa ‘Ekolu Visits the Hilo Farmers’ Market

Our haumana had a very busy day at the Hilo Farmers’ Market this morning, looking for deals and bargains. Each small group of 3-4 students had to buy products with a limited amount of money. The foods purchased were shared during a pilina building activity for our keiki later in the day. The kids enjoyed talking with their friends from 3A and eating yummy foods like rambutan, tangerines and mangoes. But the big hit of the tasting party was the chips and homemade salsa!

In addition to shopping, students used their observation skills to gather ideas for their own businesses, which they will be opening up in just a few short weeks. Students took note of the various displays used by vendors to create a demand for their products. They also noticed other strategies producers used for selling their products, like giving out free samples, distributing flyers on the benefits of their products, giving deals or discounts, and more! It was a wonderful hands-on learning experience for the keiki.

Mahalo to our nine chaperones that helped us out today: Malia, Kalei, Michelle, Ashley, and Alenna were the parents from 3B that joined us. Thank you to the chaperones from 3A as well: Annette, Kelly, Tamia and Isha!

Reading, Writing and the iPad

Students in 3B completed an independent research study on a famous person of their choice. For this research, Kumu Kanani taught the haumana how to use their iPads for notetaking. Students recorded information about their famous person from books and the internet. Next they went through the research writing process to complete a written paper. Various skills were integrated from reading and writing to produce their written work.

Kumu Kanani and Ms. Richardson visited our class earlier this week to teach us all about a new App called “Explain Everything”. Using this tool, the students created a slideshow of their findings to inform others about their famous person.

We learned that this app is a great way to publish a piece of writing in an interesting and creative way. However, this app isn’t as easy as the other apps that we’ve been using on the iPads. The great thing is that our keiki are very eager to explore and discover how to do things on their own. They have taught their teachers a thing or two already using “Explain Everything”.

As we finish up our projects, we will post them here for you to see. Hulali is the first one to complete her slideshow. Take a look and see what she learned about Laura Ingalls Wilder and about the app “Explain Everything”. Good job, Hulali!

Hāweo Awardees Recognized

ʻAlohikea and Ty were recognized on Tuesday for being awarded the Hāweo Award for the month of December. Both of these students worked hard to earn money to donate to our adopted families over the Christmas season. In addition, they contributed generously to our Pennies for Pauahi and the Operation Christmas Child project. ʻAlohikea regularly helps to feed the homeless on the weekends with her family in downtown Hilo. These awesome students truly demonstrate the meaning of Kahiaʻu… giving without expecting anything in return. Mahalo for your generous spirit!

The TRUE Meaning of Christmas

Papa ‘Ekolu completed their annual Holiday Gift Giving Project this year which extended beyond just one family. Our awesome Third Graders collected over $850 for our adopted family of five from Hawaiian Paradise Park. In addition, our gift giving inspired others to give generously and we collected another $550 from other friends. This enabled us to purchase gifts for another 6 families! One Papa ‘Ekolu ‘Ohana even asked for information on finding a family to adopt on their own. Giving to others has gotten contagious!

Mahalo Papa ‘Ekolu for showing others what the true meaning of Christmas is about… thinking of others and helping those in need. That’s what Jesus would do, and that’s what he was sent to us to do. He is our Savior and this is the season to rejoice and praise Him. God bless you all!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells…

As I got out of my car at Yukio Okutsu Veteran’s Home to visit my mom tonight, I noticed a crowd of kids and adults gathered in front of the entrance. Flashing lights, Santa hats and reindeer antlers indicated that a group had come to carol to the residents. “Aww shucks,” I thought to myself, “I missed it!”

Well, to my surprise, I didn’t miss it. The Boy Scout Troupe was running a little late and I was just in time to catch the show. An even greater surprise was when I spotted my student, Noah, singing in the second row. “That’s my student!” I announced to my mom with pride. The sweet voices of kids singing cheerful Christmas songs made me smile, but it was even more enjoyable when I recognized Noah in the crowd of performers.

Thank you, Noah and his troupe, for sharing your aloha with us at the Veteran’s Home. My mom loved the singing and the Christmas cards and gifts that you made. As you can see in the picture with her, you made her smile from ear to ear. These gestures of kindness and love touch the hearts of many. You can put this gift of yours in our class “Sparkle Box”. Thanks for sharing and demonstrating the true meaning of Christmas!

The True Meaning of Christmas

Kumu Shonnie talked about the true meaning of Christmas during her lesson in Christian Education today. The kids showed their understanding of Christmas in a short group presentation. Here, one group chose to make a skit to show what Christmas means to them. What does it mean to you?
