Congratulations to Kai and Trinity! These two outstanding haumana were recognized today at the Hāweo Luncheon for demonstrating Kūpono throughout the month of March. In fact, these students consistently demonstrate this Hawaiian value the whole year through. Kūpono means honest, decent, appropriate behavior at all times. Our awardees are awesome students that model impeccable behavior in and out of the classroom.

The sun came out last week so our Papa ‘Ekolu students could finally celebrate the end of the 2nd Trimester. This swim party was originally scheduled for February 13th, but poor weather foiled our plans. Thank you ke ‘Akua for blessing us with sunshine this time around!

Yesterday we honored Kelson and Aaron at a special luncheon for receiving the Hāweo Award for the month of February. They have consistently demonstrated kahiau by sharing their positive attitude and joy with the class each and every day that they come to school. Mahalo to their ‘ohana for joining in on the celebration!

Our annual Speech Festival was held today at Lunalilo Hale. Four fabulous fabulists retold fables that were originally written by a Greek writer named Aesop. Trinity and Sid recited “Jupiter and the Queen Bee” while Hina and Napua performed “The Donkey, the Lion and the Rooster”. Students from other grade levels entertained us with their own selections from a variety of genres as well. Excellent job, girls!
Congratulations to Shawna and Noah for being selected as our Hāweo recipients for January! These students were recognized and honored at a special luncheon last week. Mahalo to their families for joining in on the celebration! Sorry I missed it, but I was thinking of you two students.
It was a funfilled filled week of learning in San Diego with friends from KS Hawai’i, Maui, Kapālama and other people from places around the world. I met people from as far as Africa and Canada as well as teachers from across the United States. So many apps and tricks on the iPad were shared from teachers that use them in their very own classrooms. It was a bit overwhelming, but inspiring to say the least. Now I will need to sit down and skim through my notes to see what I can actually implement in my classroom.
A visit to a school named HI TECH ELEMENTARY also opened my eyes to classes that emphasize Project Based Learning. A philosophy of teaching that believes that student voice, choice and interest is core to their learning as well as creativity and collaboration. Many exciting activities went on in all of the classrooms there and the children were engaged and enthused about their learning. What a wonderful sight to see! I can’t wait to see my students again and share with them my new learnings and pictures from my trip.
