Math and iPad Integration

Students worked on a real-world project for Math class this week. The task was to plan a Thanksgiving dinner for their extended ‘ohana. They needed to calculate the cost of the food being served, as well as the time it would take to cook the turkey. In their plan they had to decide what time to put the turkey in the oven so that it would be ready to serve to their guests at 6:00 P.M.

To present their project to the class, students learned how to use a new App called Keynotes. Watch the video to see the terrific teamwork and impressive presentation by these four Third Graders.

The Sparkle Box

image

The Sparkle Box, written by Jill Hardie, is a moving Christmas story that describes the true meaning of Christmas. A young boy named Sam is excited about the coming of Christmas and hopes to get a toy train that he set his eyes upon in a store. Through the generous and kind actions of his parents, Sam learns that Christmas is really about the gifts that we give to Jesus… our actions towards others, especially the needy.

After reading this touching story, our class decided to try to add gifts to Jesus in our own sparkle box. We hope that everyone can demonstrate KAHIAU by giving to others without expecting anything in return. As students complete their kind deeds, they will write it down and place it in our sparkle box in class. Before Christmas vacation we will open the box and share what’s inside.

What kind deed have you done lately? Please share with us your gifts to Jesus.

Princess’s Ball

Papa ‘Ekolu honored their beloved Ke Ali’i Pauahi at their annual Princess’s Ball held at Nani Mau Gardens on Thursday, November 14, 2013. The day began with a stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens. Students learned in school that Pauahi loved flowers and often worked in her own garden even though she had professional gardeners to do the job. The students went on a scavenger hunt looking for specific items throughout the grounds.

The self-tour of the garden was followed by a delicious buffet outside on the lanai area. Students, teachers, parents and even our principal and headmaster enjoyed dining on chicken katsu, teri beef, and roast pork. A scrumptious cake was served at the end of our wonderful meal.

The haumāna showed off their dancing skills that they learned in music class with Mrs. Debus. The Kamehameha Waltz played as the keiki stepped, swayed and twirled around the dance floor. It was a splendid event to watch.

Pictures will be shared in an iMovie on our blog. Check back soon to see the highlights from the ball!

Mahalo to our parents Mrs. Bence, Mrs. Azevedo, and Ms. Aiona for helping to chaperone this event. We also appreciated the help of our other KS faculty members, Mrs. Debus, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. DeSa, and our awesome principal, Mrs. Kanehailua. Thank you, Dr. Stender, for joining in on our celebration!

iPads in Action

Students were actively engaged in their learning today as Papa ‘Ekolu helped Papa Mālaa’o make a digital poster. Pictures were drawn in the drawing pad app and photos were found off the internet to use in the students’ creations.
