Guidelines

SELECTING YOUR SENIOR SERVICE PROJECT AS A HOMEROOM
1)     Gather your homeroom(s) together.
2)     Introduce yourself & welcome everyone. Begin with prayer.
3)     Introduce the purpose & kuleana of Senior Service Day.
4)     Share why you feel it’s important to give back. Speak from the na‘au.
5)     Transition to engaging your classmates in a discussion:

  • Have each classmate write down 2 community needs.
  • Evaluate the needs & identify which ones come up most frequently.
  • List & rank the top 5 needs, with #1 being the top need.
  • Identify possible service organizations for all 5 community needs.

6)     Work together with your homeroom teacher to contact those service organizations.
7)     Follow-up with your homeroom(s) about the progress of your top 3 choices.
8)     Re-assess if needed.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR HOMEROOM KUMU

  • Allow your homeroom representative to take the lead on the discussion.
  • Add mana‘o when appropriate.
  • Do not let the discussion fade. Instead, provide thoughtful prompts to stimulate critical thinking.
  • Ask your homeroom representative what he/she would like you to do to help.
  • You may want to take your own notes in case your homeroom representative needs to reflect back on what was discussed.
  • Praise your homeroom representative & students for their work.
  • Infect enthusiasm in the planning process J

Aloha, my name is ______________________, and I am a Senior at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama.  How are you today?

Great! I am calling because we would like to see if you would be interested in participating in our Senior Service Day Project on Wednesday, Oct. 17.  On that day, our entire Senior Class will be out in the community giving back in various ways. My classmates and I met together, and we feel that your organization would be a good match for us. We do have a big group of about ____ students & adults that are interested in helping your organization that day. Do you think this would be possible?

 If the reply is “yes”…

Wonderful! We are excited to help you!

[and they have time to talk]

If you don’t mind, could I get some information from you?

(proceed to fill-out the project proposal form)

 [and they need to go]

Great! I know you are very busy and want to thank you for your time. May I have your email address so I can send you information about our service project? [write down email address] Perfect. I will email you that information as well as a form that we need to organize our project. If you can complete the form & email it back to me by ___________________, that would be great.
