Today we read “ish” by Peter H. Reynolds.  What do you think were some of the big ideas?  What connections did you make to Ramon?  Have you ever been ready to quit? Did you overcome the feeling?  How?

I think the big ideas were: feelings, positive thinking, and teasing. I think feelings because when Raymond saw that his sister liked his pictures (because she put them up on her bedroom wall) his spirits lifted because since his sister liked them, and since his sister gave him the insparation to do what he truly loved, His feelings weren’t hurt by his brother, Leon anymore. I think positive thinking was another one because he took what his sister said in a nice, positive way and beban to draw again. He did what he loved to do. I think teasing was another one because Raymond’s brother teased him about his drawing of the vase.

I think the movie, “How to Eat Fried Worms” was simallar to “ish”.

I think that one of the big ideas were to never give up.My connection is that one day I was drawing a turtle surfing a wave and my brother keenan told me that I don’t draw nice.He said that it was very ugly.I threw my paper on the floor and I said I QUIT!I was also super mad at my brother, but my mom and dad said that is was the best drawing he ever saw.I was sooooo HAPPY!

I think the big idea is to never give up in rough times. My conection to Ramond is that his brother is just like my sister. she always teases me like Ramon’s brother, but at the end my sister and I always make up like Ramon and his big brother. I have been ready to quit when i am pushed too hard in soccer, and in flagfootball when I through an interception. But then I hear my sister cheering me on then I feel like playing again.

  4. Puuwai Says:

My conection to Ramon is that I never give up and try your best to reach your hardest goal.
I think one of the BIG ideas was keep on trying.
I saw in this story that he fell in a lot of pot holes, but he kept on making his way up. Until he had a little ish in him.
I been through lots and lots of rough times through out my life.

  5. Keanu Says:

My connection is when me and my sister, Reaves, play four-square.When she doesn’t serve, I tell her hurry up.That’s like when Ramon’s brother was laughing at Ramon’s picture. When I tell her she’s out, she doesn’t want to play anymore. That’s like when Ramon quit drawing pictures. When I encouraged my sister to play, she does and that’s like when Ramon saw his pictures in a new way. That made him want to draw again.

  6. Evan Says:

I think one of the big ideas was that when somebody teases you about the way you do things, you should ignore them. When Ramon got teased by his brother about drawing, he decided to quit. But his sister was taking all his old drawings and posting them on the wall. That made Ramon get back his good feelings about drawing. When I first played soccer, I thought it was hard so I was almost gave up. I was also mad but throughout the seasons, I got better until I realized that”Don’t give up. Try your best as you can.”Now, my team has good strategy about playing soccer. When somebody teases or makes a not nice comment, try and do a better job to entertain them.”Remember. Don’t ever give up. Try the hardest you can”

  7. keenyn Says:

I THINK THAT THE BIG IDEA WAS LIKE IF SOMEONE SAYS THAT YOUR DRAWING ARE NOT GOOD THEN SOMEONE SAYS THAT IT IS GOOD THEN YOU DON’T LIKE IT THEN YOU WAN’T TO QUIT YOU JUST SAYS I DID MY BEST.

  8. Tara Says:

I think one of the big ideas is that if someone discourages you from doing something you love, don’t listen to them and keep on trying. I kind of felt bad for Ramon because his brother made fun of his drawings. I infer that maybe his brother was jealous! I was happy when Ramon saw his sisters room covered with his crumpled pictures. That’s something I would do for my brother too. I think it made Ramon see how much drawing means to him and even though his drawings didn’t really look like what he meant them to be, it still looked “good-ish” to him. The lesson is “Always try hard-ish!”

  9. kalani Says:

I think that one of the big ideas is 1. never give up 2. Even though you don`t like it other people might like it 3. be who you are and don`t try and be someone else and 4. don`t let any one bring you down.I can connect to Ramon because like in the story,Ramon crumpled all of his mistakes and like when I play my DS/DSI when I am on a bonus level or something an I mess up I turn my game of and start over.

  10. Caitlin Says:

I think the big idea is don’t give up and keep on trying. Unless you keep on trying you never know if you could do it or not.I also learned you shouldn’t tease anybody because it could hurt their feelings or discourage them from doing something that they really want to do. My connection to Ramon is when I first started ukulele lessons I was struggling so, I wanted to quit and give up. Then I started to get better because I was practicing. Now I’m more comfortable. I learned when you first try something don’t give up continue to try your best.

  11. koalii Says:

I thought that Ramon was discouraged cause his brother was teasing him about his drawing. When his sister took his crumpled paper and hanged it up on her wall Ramon felt like it was special. The big idea is to believe in yourself. If you really want to do something try to do it keep trying. I made a connection because I love to play sports and I think that it is my passion like ramon passion is drawing.

  12. Dylan Says:

I think that a big IDEA was that (it doesent matter what it lookes like if its fine to you its fine).Once, when I wasn’t hitting well,I said in my mind that(I quit)! Then dad said to get out of the batters box.

  13. Esther Says:

This story is about Remon always liket to draw. it dident mader where he draws it can be on the tolet. But his brother testd his drawing. When he cerrumpuld it then thruw it.His sister snekt and got it.She put it on her bedroom wall.Remon went in her room and Remon saw all of the drawings that he made. The sister said this vase is shapish.I think that the sister is nice becuase she didint say that Remons drawing was uguly she adeded ish in side of it.

  14. Hunter Says:

My connection with Ramon,is when me and my friends: Teani, Rachel, and Terina, were playing softball at Teani’s and Terina’s house, Teani said that i’m not good at softball. 🙁 I was going to stop plaing, but even though she ripped my heart I was still going to play, because I wanted to stand up for myself, and play. 🙂 Because it doesn’t matter how you play, its about having fun, and learning. 🙂

  15. Kason Says:

I think the big idea was never give up.I think that another big idea was to encourage other people who look like they need help and don’t just laugh at who ever needs help.once I thought that I was going to loose but then my teammates cheered me on and then I won 1st place in my Jui-Jitsu tournament.

  16. Noelani Says:

I think that the main idea was to keep on trying and never give up. just like Ramon who loved to draw. So one day while he was drawing his brother came up to him and said” what kind of picture is that”? and since that made his feelings hurt so bad he decided to quit and since I haven’t had any feeling like him I just connect with something kind of simillar so one day when I had choir practice I was practicing my solo then since I was nervos and kind of stopped they said hurry up Noelani do it come on.

  17. Kason Says:

I think the big idea was to never give up and keep on trying and even tho people sets you down get back up and keep on trying. Sometimes when i do baseball or jiu-jitsu people sometimes says that i am bad or i hit slope but my coach say to me that i need to not give up and try my best next time i baseball or do jiu-jitsu

  18. kalista Says:

I agree with Keenyn when she said that if someone else does not like your drawings or anything else, you can say that you DID YOUR BEST!

  19. Puuwai Says:

I agree with Catlin when she said that he never give up & keep on trying.

  20. Puuwai Says:

Now I know that I should not give up on something I am us-too!
I think this book taught me a lot to remember.

  21. Hunter Says:

I can connect with Noelani, I was singing in my mom’s room, to my dad, my sisters, and my brother, I was kind of nervous
to sing to them. So when I sang, I stoped a little, and messed up a bit.

  22. Esther Says:

I can cnnect with this book becuase some people tese me about my speling in 1 grad.
