Today we heard the story of Greg Mortensen and the friends he made in Korphe.  We talked about some of the big ideas: Appreciation, Helping/Giving (We all have something to give), Being Resourceful, Moving Forward and Teamwork.  What are your thoughts about this true story?  Any questions?  Connections?  Do you think there are some other big ideas we didn’t discuss?

Listen to the wind is about teamwork. The poor people seen a man climbing the mountains. His name was Dr.Greg. The poor people needed a school Dr.Greg helped them build a school. They used team work. They appreciate what they had

  2. kalani Says:

I think that we[our class]forgot to menshin Greatfulness.I think Greatfulness is a big idea because the people in Korphe were Greatful for what they had.

  3. Bailey Says:

How did Dr. Greg get to the mountains with one string? Dr. Greg never gave up. The central asia culture says the prayer leader never does anything phisical. From the mountain to the city that they will build the school is 18 miles. The wise man said to Dr. Greg listen to the wind. Dr. Greg heard the children crying for help and Dr. Greg helpt the poor children.

  4. kalista Says:

Listen to the wind talks about poor people that are very appreciated about what they have. They also use a lot of teamwork to build a super nice school.Even the kids helped build the school! We did not even have to build Kamehameha schools. They had to draw and write with sticks on the dirt and ground! We are soooooo lucky to have pencils and paper to write on!

  5. Evan Says:

Dr.Greg was an important man to the pakistani people. He helped them to make the village more prosperous. The people gave up all of what they had without complaining to help him build things and make their lives stronger. I think the people were helpful. I think I would do the same as Dr Greg for the needy. I think the story inspired me.

  6. Noelani Chun Says:

In this village the people are very poor and so they saw this man climbing in the mountains and since he needed just so little things more then this one family in the village gave him food,drinks/water and a bed to sleep in at night time. Then one day he went to the wise man and asked him questions about the people around and the wise man said listen to the wind and when he listened he could hear children asking and begging for a school and Dr.Greg gave all he could and never gave up just kept moving foward and they had a school and Dr.Greg was the teacher the sad thing was that the wise an died. But 1 last thing is that she was so cool in her drawings with fabric and cotton.

  7. Trent Says:

The book Listen to the Wind is about a town and the town sees a man in the mountains. His name was Dr.Greg. He was very hungry, thirsty and tired. The children and the moms and dads helped build a bridge and school. The children used to write with sticks.

  8. Keanu Says:

Dr.Greg was a good man.The people of pakistan were good to Greg and greg wanted to to do something to thank them.He went to a wise man and asked what he would do to thank them. The wise man said Listen to the Wind.Dr. Greg closed his eyes and heard the childrens crys. They wanted a school. So Greg left pakistan for one year and came back to pakistan and built a school.Dr.Greg cared for the children.

  9. Esther Says:

This book is about is the pepol appreceating what they have. And if they couldn’t afford anything, they wouldn’t go to the stor and buy a gift. They didn’t have paper to draw on, they had sticks to draw on the floor. And a man named Dr. Greg that wanted to be a nurs so he can help pepol. He helped the other pepol to build a school but they had 2 seprate mountains. He used some of his supplies to build a bridge with the other pepol which is teamwork. So they went across the bridge when it was done and they build a school. And this is a true story. He told some pepol to lisin to the wind and the wind remins them of the children because when the children is yelling or playing the wind carries it for them to hear.

  10. Pu'uwai Says:

I think appreciation, teamwork, and helping/giving is the best formula for doing anthing. Dr Greg is the perfect example of this. By helping others you will receive the same in return. He never gave up and kept moving forward. Which is key to success in anything you do in life.

  11. Camille Says:

I really think we missed a really big idea:freindship. I think this may be an idea because sience Korphe helped Dr. Greg, Mr.Greg gave them back a brand new school to learn in. They were sort of(kind of) bonding together in freindship and appreciation. Not only that but the children of Korphe and Mr.Greg were also bonding together as friends. Ithought of two more ideas: loving and caring. They also did the right thing(e ola pono) because even though the book never said they were christains, they still helped out Mr. Greg.. It’s like Korphe just left out the part that Mr.Greg was from the United States and maybe had a ton more money then everyone in Korphe. They still helped him get well and Mr.Greg was appreciative so he buit a bridge and a school for the children of Korphe and now they don’t have to write with sticks in the ground.=)

  12. Charlize Says:

In the book Listen To The Wind they show helping and giving. Dr.Greg was sick and lost so the people from pakistan was helping him and they give him tea.

  13. Dylan Says:

I like the story “Listen to the Wind” because tha children get to have a school and a bridge to cross the mountain. I think that Dr.Greg was nice to help the children build everything. I think its pretty cool tha one cent can buy a pencil and a dollar can pay for a month of school. I think the lesson of the story is ” Never stop giving up”, like how Dr.Greg had to build a bridge to get the supply to the other side. Im sure the kids are happy that they have a school. Im happy they have a school. Thats a pretty good book.

  14. Dylan Says:

I like thos kinds of books. they are interesting.

  15. Caitlin Says:

My thought is we should be appreciative for what we have.
I learned the importance of recycling, working, problem solving, and being creative.

  16. Tara Says:

This story is very touching be cause the children didn’t have a whole lot to start with but they cared for Dr.Greg anyway. I liked the part where the wise man told Dr.Greg to listen to the wind so he closed his eyes for a moment and heard the children sobbing they wanted a school because they were only writing with sticks on cement.

  17. Hunter Says:

Today we read a story bassed on
Dr.Gerg Mmortenosn. Dr.Gerg Mortenson is a nurse. Dr. Gerg
Mortenson walked from the U.S.A to a vilige in korphe. Dr.Gerg Mortenson, wakled in the
cold, and snowy day. Dr.Gerg Mortenson got sick because it was cold, and snowy. Then a family from the vilige gave Dr.Gerg Morteson some tea. Then
hefelt better. So he went home. A year later he came back. he broutght suplies to builld a school. But there was no wae to get across, so they built a brige to get across. then they built the school for the children.

  18. Kason Says:

I think that teamwork was very important in this book because they wouldn’t have built the bridge and the school.I think he said listen to the wind because he could hear the kid’s writing with stick’s on the ground.Dr.Greg was such a good man that he cared fore a very poor village.I wonder if there not as poor as they use to be.

  19. keenyn Says:

Dr.Greg was lost. He was also sick. He saw this village with people so he said can you help me? He then went inside. They gave Dr.Greg tea and then gave him some bread. They let him stay longer until he felt better. He did not feel sick any longer. He then left and came back to school.

  20. Kiai Says:

In the book it said to listin to the wind then they listined to the wind carfuly and then they did then they herd chidrin calling for a school.

  21. Noelani Says:

YOU BETTER LISTEN TO THE WIND BECAUSE JUST LIKE DR.GREG LISTENING TO THE WIND AND HELPING OTHER PEOPLE

    AND YOU COULD HELP OTHERS
    !!!! too!!!!!!!!!!!
