Today we explored the Polynesian Hall and the newly renovated Hawaiian Hall at the Bishop Museum. What did you learn? What artifacts surprised you? Which ones were most interesting to you? Do you have any questions about what you saw? Why do you think this was an important field trip for us?

I learned how Hawaiian people made clothes back then, using bird feathers. i was surprised that yellow was the rarest color for clothes. The thing that was interesting to me was a necklace made out of hair.the was important for us because if we never went there we wouldn’t have learned how Hawaiians made houses out of leaves. we learned about our Hawaiian people and Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

When we went to the Bishop Museum,we learned about Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures. When we went to both halls,we saw things that were made from coconuts, bones, teeth, stone, feathers, wood, shells and fibers.I think my favorite part of Hawaiian hall is the play center with all the Hawaiian stuff on the 2nd floor.

When I went to the Hawaiian Hall in fourth grade, I thought that it was cool to see the hawaiian artifacts. I think that the Fishing God was the place that I learned the most. I never knew that there was a Fishing God, so it opened my mind to the different Hawaiian gods whereas, we believe that there is only 1 god. I guess you could call it our Paradigm…

I learned that the Hawaiians had several kings, queens, princess and prince. They wore beautiful clothing. Their clothing were made from natural things like birds, cotton, plants. They did everything by hand. There was no sewing machine, needles and thread. I was surprised to learn that the feathers they made the capes from took so long to make. The most interesting place I went to was the Hawaiian Hall because we got to see how things were back then. I really liked looking at the 2 poi pounders. I never see more then one in my whole life. This field trip was important because it taught to appreciate the past because our Hawaiian people back then knew how to survive without, cell phones, computers, bluetooth, electricity, icebox, tv’s, cars, money, fancy houses and clothes. The made use of everything around them and used them to build things, make thing, hunt for food and most of all they believed in God.
