Our Hāmākua huaka’i

We went on a huaka’i to Hāmākua. Me and my class learned about Laupāhoehoe point and Akaka falls. At Akaka falls we went hiking and took pictures of grass lands which is called greenery. Greenery means when there’s lots of grass. In Laupāhoehoe we took pictures of lots of really nice things. On our huaka’i wē meet a lady called aunty Lucile. Aunty Lucile told us how she survived the tsunami. She said to survive a tsunami is to go to higher ground. And aunty Lucile told us 24 people died from the tsunami.

  1. Aloha mai kakou! I am so happy to hear that your class was able to journey to Hamakau, where my family comes from. It looks likes you had lots of fun and you learned alot! My papa and late-mama live in Honomu, where Akaka Falls is! Maybe he might have seen your bus as you passed by the old Kayumungi Store (where the zipline company is). When you saw the Laupahoehoe tsunami memorial, did you recognize a name that has the same last name as me? That man, Macario Bufil, is my papa’s brother. My papa tells us, my family, that his brother was excited to see the fish at the point when the water went out farther to sea, but when the water came back in, he could not run to higher ground fast enough or in time.
