Go! Go! Go! Math Multiplication Marvels

Hi All!

As last school year wound down to a close, Mrs. Pai and I had a brief opportunity to talk w/the incoming 5th graders (you).  We shared our expectations as you entered 5th grade…to read the book “Pedro’s Journal,” by Pam Conrad and to be able to multiply up to 12s by answering correctly in 2 seconds or less!

Our class has been taking a number of timed multiplication tests in class and would like to Ho’omaika’i (Congratulate) the following students on a job well done!  They have tested out with 100%!!  Whoop! Whoop!

CONGRATULATIONS to the “First Fantastic 6!”:

Daniel Serville,  Kainoa Cook,  Kyden DeSa,  Bree Foster,  Pono Yanagi,

Noah Brigoli

This is the class breakdown as of today Tuesday, August 16th:  6 students scored a perfect 100%!  8 students scored between 90-99%;  7 students score between 80-89%;  and 3 students scored between 70-79%.  I look forward to seeing these scores improve by more practicing at home and on ixl math.  Remember…ho’omau:  to persevere.  Nothing worthwhile comes easy!

Here are some tips that may help to improve those math skills:

*Math Tip: If you know what 6 X 9 is (54) then you know what 12 X 9 is!  Its double (54 + 54= 108)  so, 24 X 9 would be??? (108 + 108= 216)  Now isn’t that much easier than trying to do the normal algorithm?

*Math Tip for Ohana: Practice multiplication fact recall up to 6’s!  Have haumana begin to practice doubling the numbers or using what they know to come to the correct answer.  An example:  If I know that 4 X 8=32 then, 8X8=64 which is double my answer…or If 6 x 8 = 48 then 12 (which is double 6) X 8 = 96

There’s always more than one way to solve a math problem…Example of another way to solve a problem:  8 X 7=…I know that 5 X 7 = 35 and 3 X 7 = 21 so I add 35 and 21 5o get 56!

STUDENTS: HOW CAN YOU APPLY ANY OR ALL OF THESE MATH TIPS?  WOULD IT BE USEFUL TO YOU OR NOT?  PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS IN 3-5 SENTENCES.

OHANA: SHARE YOUR MANA’O ON MATH!  DID YOU APPRECIATE TIP?WHY? IF NOT, WHAT YOU LIKE TO SEE IN OUR MATH SECTION OF OUR BLOG?  PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS BRIEFLY.
