“Seeing Cinderella” by Jenny Lundquist

Seeing Cinderella is a wonderful book about Callie, a young girl who receives a pair of glasses that let’s her see the world clearly. Because the glasses are an ugly, bulgy pair, the style causes her to hate the idea of wearing them, but after revealing their power she suddenly becomes interested in the idea. The glasses are magic, they allow her to see other peoples thoughts and their true feelings. They help her to find her true friends and see the good and bad in others.

Callie just entered middle school and socially it’s been rough. Her ‘best friend’ Stacy replaced her and always get what she wants in their relationship. Ellen; Stacy’s new best friend has a secret and to keep it that way she trashes Callie and everything she does. However, not everything is rocky, along the way Callie befriends a new student Ana. Callie realizes that she’s not the only one having problems.

This book is very reflective of the Hawaiian value of Pilina. Pilina means relationships and throughout the story Callie learns how to act in a relationship. She sees and starts to understand how the others person in a friendship needs to act. I think that the journey Callie takes helps her to strengthen her pilina with both her friends and family. Her entire adventure, and her glasses, helped her to see her life much clearer, in more ways than one.  Will this modern day Cinderella get through middle school? It’ll be hard even with a pair of magic classes… Find out if she does by reading “Seeing Cinderella” by Jenny Lundquist.
