Grand Opening Innovation Lab
Students are innovators!!!
Students had the opportunity to visit the Innovation Lab during recess this week. The Innovation Lab is a place designed to teach kids about science, math, invention, innovation and creativity through engagement with hands-on activities.
Computer Science Week 2015
Students in grades k-5 will be celebrating Computer Science Week by doing coding activities in all their iLearning Lab visitations! Kindergarteners and first graders will use Scratch, Jr., a programming language software that enables them to create their own interactive stories and games. Students in grades 2-5 are learning how to code using a variety of tutorial programs featuring Anna and Elsa from Frozen, Star War droids, Steve and Alex of Minecraft and many others.
Our EV3 Robot Warriors!
Our 5th graders have been very busy building and programming their own EV3 Mindstorm robots. Each group has been customizing their robot with various sensors to do different challenges. Working as a team, students are learning valuable lessons in designing, building, programming, testing and improving their robots. Robotics also develops valuable 21st century skills like teamwork, time management, problem solving, and communication.
How fast can you count in Binary?
Students in grades 4 and 5 have completed their Binary Code Unit. As a culminating activity, a Binary Code Competition was held to highlight some “fast” fingers! Congratulations to the following winners: 1st Place-Dawson(grade 5), 2nd Place-Keakahaapoli(grade 5), 3rd Place-Makana(grade 5), 4th Place-Lily (grade 4).

Innovation in Action

Our Coding Club members formed teams of 2 people and using Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots and the technology lab’s computers, they programed their robots to complete various tasks. It soon became apparent that our keiki are very competitive! Mahalo to Jonah for helping our teams with the basic programming concepts. Our robots (Green Bay, Monster Programmer, D3Ray, and Tubie Twins) were off and running!
Lego Robotics will be taught next year at the elementary school and we look forward to future competitions. Robotics is a great way to motivate students toward STEM careers by exercising their creativity, building their confidence and problem-solving skills.
Teachers Went Back To School!

Teachers were able to participate this week in an awesome workshop presented by Drew and Brad of “Two Guys and Some iPads” fame. Teachers learned how to use augmented reality applications to enhance students’ educational experiences. 5th graders had a chance to experience augmented reality firsthand. Watch the video above to see Drew and Brad interact with our fifth grade students.
9,251 lines of code written so far by our Kamehameha School’s coders!
Introducing our Coding and Gaming Club!
Our coders meet every Wednesday after school to design, create and solve various coding challenges using Code.org, Tynker, Scratch and Lightbot coding programs. Our students collaborate together, learn from each other and learn about coding. Students work through courses that are self-guided and self-paced along with various “unplugged” activities (paper airplane challenge, binary bead bracelets, etc.)
Meet the Coders…Jonah S., Joshua M., Koali’I B., Cade C., Makana G., Keakahaapoli K., Cami N., Ellie R., Johnson U.,
