Aloha, the Comet Coders are all systems GO for their first Lego League State competition!

This yearʻs Elementary First Lego League team, the Comet Coders consist of 8 team members:  Tevyn Apo, Myla Tuitele, Daniel Mauiola, Hiʻilei Alo, Vann Siphers, Lilinoe Peterson, Jarren Merritt, and Braelyn Hong. Coaches are Kumu Kaiaokamalie and Kumu Ashley Canillo.

As a team, we identified  physical and social problems faced by astronauts during long duration space exploration. By creating an innovative space suit, we hope to help astronauts with their physical and emotional problems during long durations of space exploration. After researching about current space suits, we decided to try and improve the suits by each focusing on one aspect of the suits (suit, helmet, gloves, boots, sensors, and hollograms). We were very fortunate to take a field trip to the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy.  While there, we talked to 2 experts in their respective fields: Dr. Armstrong and Dr. Bulger. We also participated in various experiments. We toured the facility and the technology and even saw a 5 million dollar computer that was as big as a car!

We try to practice our core values in everything we do. We start every meeting with reciting our values and end every meeting with our original Comet Coder cheer. Twice a week, we did team building activities with Kumu Ashley. We worked as a group to brainstorm our project and always get everyoneʻs input. We even created an original song “Space” to highlight our innovative project. As we coded and built, we always tried to be positive and help each other, especially when we were having difficulty.
