Random fact: I love surveys and data! What does this have to do with the Kupuna Project??? I found that my students really could use extra support and strategies on how to overcome challenges. Resilience became the focus of our second semester! My personal goal for this school year was to integrate E OLA! in to my curriculum. I couldn’t think of a better way to teach resilience but through the voices of our Kupūna. It is so often that after losing loved ones, we share our woulda, coulda, shoulda. Although, it was a mandatory assignment, I hope that this is a special video that haumāna really do treasure. As I watched each and every video… I cried, I laughed, and I couldn’t believe all the challenges that your Kupūna have endured. But most importantly, the lesson that they learned while facing adversity without giving up. I started the unit off with my own personal example of a time that I had to be resilient, students interviewed their kupuna, students watched videos of their classmates kupūna, and then shared their personal stories of overcoming challenges. Iʻve heard rich discussion and feel confident that my students have an array of strategies that they can use when going through challenging situations. We encourage our parents to watch some of the videos and feel free to comment on our padlet also.
