“SYSTEMS: 2017 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition showcases the accomplishments of nearly 30 forthcoming graduates from the BFA program in the Department of Art + Art History at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM). Each student’s thoughts, concepts and manifestations near the completion of coursework towards a BFA degree are highlighted in this exhibition—each one has endeavored to create his or her most challenging and ambitious artwork yet.
This group exhibition is a culmination of a semester-long focused exploration of professional studio practice. Their pieces in graphic design, drawing and painting, glass, ceramics, fiber, printmaking, photography, and sculpture show a diverse range of ideas and techniques. The Graphic Design program presents its students’ work in The Commons Gallery. The works of the students in the Studio Art program are featured at The Art Gallery at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.”

The student publication Ho‘okumu is seeking artwork to be considered for itʻs 2016-17 publication. Featuring poems, essays, and artwork from Kamehameha Kapālama’s haumāna compiled and designed by your fellow classmates. Last yearʻs journal received national recognition when it earned a 1st place award from the American Scholastic Press Association and a poem featured in the edition written by Malu Napuelua won the Associations “Outstanding Poem Award.”

“For the third year, Pu‘uhonua Society’s Maoli Arts Alliance presents its juried contemporary art exhibition Contact, featuring new and recent artworks by Hawai‘i artists.
Each year jurors select artworks that explore themes of “contact,” and this year’s show especially looks at cultural exchange and migratory movements, with many of the artists reflecting on personal narratives of heritage and connection…
In just two years, Contact has established itself as one of the leading platforms for contemporary island artists to exhibit their work. For this year’s exhibition, curators Herman Piʻikea Clark and Isabella Ellaheh Hughes asked artists to think about the intersection between the foreign and the familiar and the relationship between intimacy and interdependence that has come to define Hawai‘i as a place, a people, and a 21st-century society.”
For the month of March, Canon Gallery will be exhibiting photographs made by KS photography students. Ms Lynnete and I selected what we considered to be some of the best film-based images made during the past 2 years from Photo I, Photo II, and Independent Study students. The show is free and open to the public, so feel free to stop by any week day from 9am-5pm until March 30.
Starting Sunday 1/10/16, there will will be a photography exhibition on view at Kaimuki Public Library featuring work made in collaboration between Photo I students and students from a local charter school, the School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability (SEEQS).
SEEQS visual arts teacher, Andrea Charuk, and I had the idea for our students to participate in a film-swap and letter exchange, resulting in double-exposure images that would illustrate the different perspectives of our huamāna. Our goal was for students to make connections with those from another school/age group/community, bridging the gap of communication through the vehicle of art and analog photography. 31 rolls of film later, we are extremely proud, not only of the images our students have created together, but also of their curiosity and openness to engaging with people and art in a new way.
The exhibition will be up for several weeks, so feel free to stop by any time during the library’s open hours. We’re also planning a reception – more information will be determined and shared in the future.
