Kids Vote Hawaii

Click to play this Smilebox slideshowDon’t be surprised to hear your child say, “I am voting in the General Election. Are you?” Kamehameha students in grades 3-5 had the opportunity to experience democracy first hand, voting online in the Kids Voting Hawaii General Election.

Each student entered his/her password and family’s precinct and district numbers and generated ballots that were virtually the same as what adult voters will see on General Election Day.

Along with the candidate choices were special student issues. The issues were suggested by the representative of the State Council, who attends Kids Voting Hawaii Board meetings, and other Student Council leaders.   These issues have since been formulated into age-specific questions of interest to students. The ballot issues were presented in a ‘yes/no’ answer format.

Students are encouraged to discuss the election candidates and issues with their parents, friends, and relatives. Parents can ask to see the on-line practice ballot, and take a virtual tour of the Kids Voting Hawaii Website (http://kidsvotinghawaii.org). Learn how the youth of Hawaii voted at 7:00 PM on General Election night before the adults’ results are announced.

Please help us make this a lesson in Democracy!
