Twenty students (grades 4 & 5) vied for the offices of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer for our ʻAha ʻŌpio (student council). The students were allowed to place up to six posters throughout campus as a means of campaigning.
Something different this year – no hand-outs were allowed as part of the campaign effort. Instead, the candidates were encouraged to “talk story” with their classmates and other students in grades one through five. Candidates were advised to go up to fellow students, introduce themselves, and offer their slogan and or seek ideas and suggestions from their constituents. Talk about grass roots campaigning! Building pilina (relationships) at its best.
This morning, the candidates had an opportunity to give their campaign speech to all 256 students as well as 40 faculty and staff and parents in attendance. Speaking to a group of more than 300 in the audience is an example of leadership in the works. Each and every candidate did a magnificent job in conveying their message and slogans.
The ballots are in! Stay tuned for the formal announcement as we name our 2013-2014 ʻAha ʻŌpio officers.
