Our haumāna have been practicing, memorizing and acting out poems, rhymes, legends and short stories in preparation for our traditional Speech Festival. Today, the semi-finals were held at all grade levels. Various faculty and staff were asked to judge these phenomonal students and believe me, being a judge made for a tough job!
The finalists will perform in front of the entire kula haʻahaʻa student body, faculty and staff on Wednesday, Jan. 30th. While this may appear to be part of the english or language arts curriculum, it is also very culturally significant. Our kupuna (pre-contact), relied solely on orating as their means of communication, teaching, sharing, retaining important events and history. Thus, our Speech Festival builds and enhances our student’s ability to share a moʻolelo (story) with not only their classmates, but with their school community as well.
