With nearly 200 in attendance, our ʻOhana Literacy Night was a HIT! The evening started off with an ‘ono spaghetti dinner with lots of door prizes – books of course! Mayor Billy Kenoi, who had a previous engagement in Kona, broke a few speed limits (ha ha) to arrive on time and be our guest reader! He read the book, “Christmas in the White House”, based on a true story about President Theodore Roosevelt. Mayor Kenoi kept the audience captivated and entertained as he read the story and walked around. We were truly blessed to have Mayor Kenoi make the time and read to our students, parents and ʻohana.
Following the reading by Mayor Kenoi, students and parents went to different sessions. We had other guest readers for the students. Our Headmaster, Dr. Holoua Stender read to our kindergarten and first graders which was followed by a fun activity. Mrs. Naeʻole-Wong read the “Polar Express” to our second and third graders – who had some hot chocolate and did an activity as well. Finally, our very vibrant high school principal Lehua Veincent read to our fourth and fifth graders.
While the students were being read to and doing an activity, their parents and ʻohana were in sessions learning more about literacy stratetgies – not only reading a book, but usage of iPads apps, telling your story as a parent to your keiki, and breaking down vocabulary.
A great big mahalo to our Language Arts Teacher, Mrs. Melissa Brilhante who spearheaded this wonderful evening and to all of our faculty and staff who helped to make it a wonderful, learning & fun time for our students and families.
We hope that you had a fantastic time with your ʻohana! Please enjoy our evening through pictures in the Animoto below!
