5: Out of this World Questions

Science is all about inquiring and questioning about the world around you. In our last class we had some great discussions about questions you had about the universe, planets, and astronomical phenomena. Some we were able to answer together and others we couldn’t.

Your quest to day is choose three questions to research from the list below and research those questions to find the answers. You can use the internet, reference books, magazines and reading books to help you find your answer.

When you find your answer, please leave me a comment with the questions you research and the answers to them. Remember to rephrase what you learned in your own words. Do not copy and paste from your sources.

Then create a poster using Wordle.  Go to Wordle and make one poster about one of the questions you researched and answered.  Make your question the largest size by repeating it 6 times. Then put in key words that explains or answers your question.  Repeat each word 3 times. Makes sure that it horizontal and the background is white.  Any other colors are up to you.

When you are done, print your Wordle as a pdf and save to the desktop of your computer. I will have a jump drive for you to drag in your wordle. Make sure you save your wordle poster with your name so I know who’s one is who’s.

Here are the questions you may pick from.

  • Why are the rocky planets in the middle of the solar system and the gaseous planets on the outside?
  • How do scientists decide what is a planet?
  • Why is Pluto no longer a planet?
  • How did the solar system come to be?
  • What is a galaxy?
  • What are the different types of galaxies?
