The presenter, Kye Haina, will share her experiences of creating an online student news presence using WordPress through the service provider School Newspapers Online. Using the Kamehameha Maui student news site and sites from other schools around the state and nation, she will demonstrate the various features and capabilities of a WordPress site for classes, parent-teacher organizations, and entire schools. The presentation will also cover the basics, such as pricing and whom to contact. This workshop would be beneficial to any teacher, adviser, or administrator with limited-to-no site building skills who wants to create a Web site for a class, school, or organization quickly, easily, and at a reasonable cost. With the plug ‘n play nature of WordPress, a quality site is within the reach of anyone with a computer and Internet access. It’s easy to navigate for students, as well, creating new opportunities for student engagement with each other and a large community of readers.

Kamehameha Schools Maui
Kye Haina has taught language arts for 14 years, the past seven at Kamehameha Schools Maui in Pukalani, Hawai’i, where she teaches language arts, including journalism. The school newspaper, which she has advised since its founding, has won district and state awards annually, including Best Newspaper in the State for the 2010-11 school year. A graduate of the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus, Ms. Haina also has a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, and a master’s degree in instructional technology from Grand Canyon University. She also holds a California teaching credential for English, a Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development certificate, and is a graduate of the 2008 American Society of News Editors Reynolds Institute.
