Makawalu…Three Worlds Meet…Hawaiian, Native American & European

April 20th and 21st marked Grade 5ʻs Makawalu Capstone Projects!  Makawalu refers to the act of looking at many ideas and things from different lenses, perspectives or points of view.  Papa ʻElima created a history museum where visitors entered and traveled back in time several hundreds of years.  There they came to see 3 worlds meeting:  The Hawaiians, Native Americans and Europeans.  The 5th grade presentations demonstrated that although we are worlds and cultures apart, there are so many universal themes that we share and have in common:  our interdependence with the land and natural resources “kukaukaʻi”, our need to communicate and express ourselves “Kakaʻolelo”, and our innovation and creativity “Kuponohana ike”.
